PURPOSE
The primary goal of an article is frequently twofold: to both inform and persuade its
audience. Articles serve to educate readers on specific topics by presenting various
perspectives and fostering a balanced argument, enabling individuals to form their own
opinions. Furthermore, articles may aim to influence readers' viewpoints, as seen in
newspaper or magazine articles that advocate for particular stances, whether positive or
negative, depending on the subject matter. The language and organization of ideas in an
article are tailored to suit the intended audience and purpose, ensuring effective
communication and achieving desired objectives.
FORMAT
Title: A clear and attention-grabbing title that summarizes the main idea or topic of the article.
Introduction: The introduction serves to introduce the topic and grab the reader's attention. It may include a hook
or an interesting fact, followed by a brief overview of what the article will cover.
Body Paragraphs: The body of the article contains the main content and is divided into paragraphs. Each
paragraph should focus on a specific aspect or subtopic related to the main idea. Use topic sentences to introduce
each paragraph and provide smooth transitions between ideas.
Conclusion: The conclusion summarizes the main points of the article and reinforces the main argument. It may
also include a call to action or a thought-provoking question to encourage further reflection on the topic.
TIPS ON HOW TO
WRITE
• Think about the audience that the article is for – when writing an article, you do not usually
know your readers personally and so you will need to think about their likely interests and
experience before you write
• How you expect, or want, your audience to react – remember that the tone of most articles
should be semi-formal, so before deciding on your tone imagine your article being read out
loud and how that might sound to your reader. For example, an article reviewing a film may be
humorous, even sarcastic, but that would not work well for more serious readers or topics
• The purpose for the article – is the purpose, or reason, for writing your article to persuade your
readers to agree with you or to invite your readers to think about different points of view and
decide for themselves? For example, do you need to sound reliable and well informed, or
choose words that strongly convey a particular emotion?
INCLUDE:
• Facts and Evidence: Include relevant facts, statistics, examples, or
quotations to support your points. This helps to add credibility to your
arguments and provides evidence for the reader to consider.
• Multiple Perspectives: Discuss different perspectives or viewpoints
on the topic to provide a balanced argument. Acknowledge opposing
viewpoints and address them respectfully to demonstrate critical
thinking.
• Personal Opinion (if applicable): Depending on the purpose of the
article, you may include your own opinion or viewpoint on the topic.
Make sure to clearly distinguish between factual information and
personal opinion.
