Gabion Walls

Gabion wall is a
retaining wall made
of stacked stone-
filled gabions tied
together with wire
Usage

• Landscaping
• Retaining wall
• Erosion
• River control
• Reservoirs
• Canal refurbishment
• Stabilization of earth
movement

MATERIA
LS
WELDED MESH

• Aperture of mesh is 75mm

• 3mm for Lower walls (~up to 2m)
• 4mm for Medium to Higher (3m to 6m)
• 5mm for Highest (above 6m)
FILLING MATERIALS (100mm to 150mm)

• Basalt
• Brick
• Broken Concrete
• Granite
• Lime stone
• Sandstone
• Shingle
• Slag
Weight of filling Materials
STANDARD SIZES

Base width increases by 0.5m for every 1m height

GABION RETAINING WALL PROFILES
TYPICAL GABION RETAINING WALL SECTIONS
INSTALLATION

• Compacted firm base (No need to dig for a foundation)

• Panels held together using Stainless steel “C” clips
• Partition in the middle of basket clipped as wall
• Lace the corners using lacing wires and tie the ends off with a
pair of pliers
• lace the formed baskets together as shown with the blue lines
on the diagram
• Insert brace in the middle of basket while filling to stop
bulging
DESIGN
CHECKS
POINTS TO CONSIDER FOR BETTER
STABILITY
• Building the Wall with 5 to 10 degrees increases the stability of wall

• Backfilling helps a bit for the stability.

• Grading of filling materials - 100mm to 200mm is preferable
• Grading variation of max 6% is good to ensure less voids thus less
settlement
• Soil Bearing; base pressure applied by the wall must not exceed the
ultimate bearing capacity of the supporting soil.

• Sliding Resistance; sliding between the base of the wall and the underlying soil due to
the lateral earth pressure, herein considered active condition

• Overturning stability; overturning of the wall due to horizontal earth pressureforces

when the retrained soil mass become unstable (active failure) shouldsatisfy the required
conditions

• Internal stability verification; for each layer of gabion a bearing capacity andsliding
resistance verification should be mad

• Global Stability
• Needs Adequate drainage system to avoid hydrostatic
pressure
• Angular Rock gives good interlocking thus less deformation
