ANALYTICAL
PSYCHOLOGY
BY: CARL JUNG
1875-1965
-Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded
analytical psychology.
- He was the “Father of Analytical Psychology”
- Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung first met in Vienna, Austria in the
year 1907. About six years in 1913, the relationship between Sigmund
Freud and Carl Jung saw the former intending to pass on the mantle of the
leader of psychoanalysis to the latter.
- However, disagreements over of some specifics of Freud’s theories led to
Jung breaking off and forming his own school of thought.
- According to him Analytical Psychology is a holistic methodology which
utilizes empiricism to investigate the human psyche while emphasizing
early childhood experiences, creativity, dreams, and supernatural
elements.
-Jung believe that each of us is motivated not only by repressed experience
but also by certain emotionally toned experiences inherited by our
ancestors . These inherited image make up what Jung called the collective
unconscious . The collective unconscious includes those elements that we
have experienced individually but which have come down by our ancestors.
- Some elements of the collective unconscious become highly developed
and are called archetypes. The most inclusive archetype is the notion of self
realization, which can be achieve only by attaining a balance between
various opposing forces of personality. People are both introverted and
extraverted; rational and irrational; male and female and conscious and
unconscious.
ARCHETYPES
- are ancient or archaic images that derive from collective unconscious.
- they are similar to complexes in that they are emotionally toned collection of
associated images. But whereas complexes are individual components of personal
unconscious, archetypes are generalized and derive from component of collective
unconscious
- Also be distinctive from instinct.
Example of Archetypes
Anima and Animus
Clown or Joker

• The main assumption of analytical psychology is that the human mind is composed of both the
personal unconscious and collective unconscious .
• Jung personality was built on the basis of two attitudes of personality : Introversion and
Extroversion
Introversion
- it refers to the personality theory of persons whose psyche energy only limits their own
thoughts and feelings . They think always about themselves.
-introverts are considered a shy persons. They always focus on their own thoughts. They do
not want opinions from other person.
Extroversion
- is a personality theory type of people. It is the opposite of introversion. The psyche energy
flows towards the outer world and other people. These type of persons are very sociable and very
open minded.
-Extroverts are often described as the life of the party. Their outgoing, vibrant nature draws
people to them, and they have a hard time turning away the attention. They thrive of the interaction.
Carl Jung also described the four function of human personality which are:
1.Sensation
- a mental condition or physical feeling resulting from stimulation or
physical feeling resulting from stimulation of a sense organ or from internal bodily
change, as cold or pain.
-a state of excited feeling or interest caused among a number of persons or
throughout a community, as by some rumor or occurrence.
-it is completely of the function intuition . It refers to the process of
gathering the information directly from the sensory organ rather than from the
unconscious.
2. Thinking
- Thinking is a human function for personality. This function mostly uses
logic and reasons and focus on less emotion.
3. Feelings
- Jung defined feeling as “primarily process that takes place between the ego and a
given content
-it is like something you want to express
Example: Happiness, sadness, excitements, etc.
4. Intuition
- this is the last function of human personality. It refers to the ability to understand
something quickly without the conscious reasoning.
- it is that psychological function which transmits perceptions in unconscious way
Example: Love at first sight
Sometimes, person see somebody and falls in love immediately without any deep thinking.
This is an intuition which plays important role in humans life.
