PROFICIENCY SPOKEN EXAM PROCEDURE
• The total score for the Proficiency Spoken Exam is 20 points
• The exam is conducted and evaluated by two instructors.
• Your performance will be evaluated in terms of:
Task completion,
Grammar,
Vocabulary,
Fluency & Pronunciation
According to the Spoken Performance Assessment Criteria for Proficiency in
the following slide.

THE EXAM CONSISTS OF TWO PARTS
PART 1: Production
The instructor conducting the exam gives you a topic. You are not allowed to choose a topic and/or to
change the topic which the instructor gives you.
You are asked to read the topic out loud. You will have 1 minute to think and take notes.
At the end of this time, you are supposed to answer each of the questions.
PART 2: Interaction
You answer some follow-up questions about the same topic.

ADVICE
Describe your feelings about getting advice. You should mention:
• what kind of advice your family members give you
• why you like/dislike getting advice
• why you like/dislike giving advice to your friends
• If you could go back in time and give yourself some advice, what would you
tell your younger self?
• Whose advice do you follow more, your parents’ or your friends’ advice? Why?
• What three pieces of advice will you give your children?
ANIMALS
Describe your feelings about animals. You should mention:
• what animal best represents you
• what animal scares you
• why you would/would not like to have a pet at home
• Except for food, do humans need other animals? Why or why not?
• What is the most effective way to save endangered species?
• Why do humans have pets?
APPEARANCE
Describe your feelings about your appearance. You should mention:
• why you like/dislike your physical appearance
• what you do to improve/maintain your appearance
• what you would like to change about your appearance
• What is the first thing you notice about a person’s appearance?
• Do people in your country talk a lot about other people’s appearance? Why/Why not?
• Are there any fashion trends in the past you followed but think are silly looking now? Explain
your reasons.
ART
Describe your feelings about art. You should mention:
• if you are interested in any areas of art
• how often you go to art galleries or museums
• why you consider/do not consider yourself to be artistic
• How many forms of art can you name? What is your favorite form of art? What do you like
about it?
• Is graffiti art? Explain your reasons.
• Do you think that art is important to society? Why/Why not?
BIRTHDAYS
Describe your most memorable birthday. You should mention:
• when it was
• why it was memorable
• who you were with and what you did
• How have birthdays changed from generation to generation in your culture?
• At what ages do people have a big birthday party in your culture?
• What is the best place to have a birthday party; home, a restaurant, cafe, pub or hotel? Explain
your reasons.
CAMPING
Describe your opinions about camping. You should mention:
• what the best activity to do is while camping
• the four most important things to take with you when going camping
• what the best place to go camping is
• Which one is better; camping or staying at a five-star luxurious hotel? Explain your reasons.
• What is the best and worst thing about camping and staying at a five-star luxurious hotel?

CHALLENGES
Describe your experiences about a challenge you faced. You should mention:
• what the challenge was
• if you could succeed
• how you felt during and after the challenge
• What kind of a challenge would you like to try? (climbing Mount Everest, bungee- jumping, swimming
in all the oceans of the world, etc.)
• Some people think that facing challenges improves a person. Do you agree or disagree? Explain your
reasons.
• Challenges don’t have to be amazing. What are some normal challenges people face?
