INTRODUCTION
Background

Debre Tabor University is one of the universities in the North

part of Ethiopia and was established in September 2003.
Debre Tabor University was the third generation institute in
Ethiopia to offer degree programs for technical teachers.
Formerly it was opened at Woreta Technical College and
College of Technical Teachers Education. The university
adopted the name Debre Tabor University on July 2004. The
university follows a community based education philoophy.

Nowadays, use of information communication technology
in all over the globe is becoming very advantageous in each
and every activity. More specifically, due to this reason,
there is a rapid and considerable advancement in the
registration sector owing to the application of computer
technology. And the great break through, the sector is
showing in terms of simplifying the way that things are
done in university are mainly the result of information
technology.
background of project
An expert system is a set of programs that manipulate
knowledge to solve problems in a specialized domain that
requires human expertise.. The main components of expert
system are knowledge base and inference engine.
Knowledge base contains the domain knowledge needed to
solve the problems in the form of rules. The rules are a
popular paradigm for representing knowledge. Inference
engine is the code at the core of the system which derives
conclusions from knowledge base through inference or

reasoning. The major features of expert system are user
interface, data representation, inference, explanations,
coping with uncertainty and advantages of expert system
are fast response, increased reliability, reduced cost,
reducing errors, multiple expertise, intelligent database,
reduced danger. There are also some disadvantages of
expert system. Disadvantages are absence of common
sense, no response in exceptional cases, and no change
with changing environment
1.2Problem Identification and technique

Among the people of less-developed countries like

Ethiopia, long-lasting diseases are the growing causes
of death. Moreover, these problems become worse due
to the scarcity of specialists, practitioners and health
facilities. Generally the manual system creates the
following problems:-
Con…
Create error
Time consumption
Requires labor
No fast response
Dissatisfaction
1.3 objectives
1.3.1. General objective
 The main aim this mini project is to change
human thinking into computerized one.
1.3.2 Specific objective

 Our system has the following objectives:

To save life.
To reduce cost
To reduce error
To increase reliability
To give fast response
To reduce danger
To save time
To reduce number of employee
To reduce human labor
To develop a prototype self-learning knowledge-based system
1.4.Methodology
The aim methodology enables how to gather data
using different source
1.4.1 Data gathering methods
We are collecting data through:
Questionnaires’:-
What are childhood diseases?
What are symptoms?
Con…
Interview:-
Doctor: what are childhood diseases?
Answers: the diseases are :
measles,flu,mumps,common_cold,chick_pox,german,
measle
 Observation
1.5. programming language and software

To develop our expert system we use following software.

These are:
Prolog
Notepad
Microsoft word
Microsoft power point
1.6.Analysis of the project

Our expert system deals about medical diagnosis of

childhood diseases. Some of the diseases are:-measles,
common cold, mumps, chickenpox, fluenza,
german_measle. Some of the diseases and their
symptom.
Con…
1.7. Conclusions:

The proposed medical expert system is dealing with

child’s health and an approximate breathlessness,
chest tightness, night or early times coughing.) In the
end, based on user’s or childhood’ diagnosis of a
certain disease is established.
Con…
 However, the knowledge base needs to be constantly
updated with new symptoms and diseases. Symptoms
already available in knowledge base are not 100% correct
because different doctors have different opinions and there
are anomalies in mediciness.
