DEFENCE SERVICES
Introduction
Defence services have their own organization for
medical care to defence personnel under the banner
armed force medical services. The servies provided are
integrated and comprehensive embracing preventive,
promotive and curative services. The president of India
is the supreme commander of the Indian defence
system.
Indian defence system has been divided into 3 services.

History of Indian Medical
Defence Services
IMDS
The history of the Indian Medical
Services dates back to 1612 when on the
formulation of the east India company ,
the company appointed john woodall as
their first surgeon general. Under him,
medical corps officers (mainly civilians)
were recuited on individual contracts. The
company expanded activities in various
part of the country which necessitated the
formation and maintenance of regular
bodies of troops in India .

As a consequence they commenced employing
military surgeons from 145 onwards .
Bengal Medical Services was formed in 1764
The Madras Medical Services in 1767
The Bombay Medical Services in 1779
The three presidency Armies of Bengal, Madras
and Bombay.

The three medical services were combined into
the Indian Medical Services (IMS) in april 1886
under a surgeon general to the government of
India.
Defence Personnel
The government has provided certain concessions
to senior citizens who have worked in the Armed
Forces. Retired Defence Personnel enjoy special
cost benefits in sectors such as travel, health
housing , re-emloyment and pension.
Medical Amenties
Benefits to retired defence personnel also include
a range of medical facilities . Ex- servicemen and
their families are allowed to go for impatient and
outpatient treatment at military hospitals at any
time. The Ex- servicemen contributory health
scheme has helped them to great extent.
Medical Amenties
Non- pensioner ex- servicemen are provided
financial assistance to meet medical expenses. If
military personnel are unable to avail medical
treatment at military hospitals, they are provided
around 75-90 percent financial assistance from
the Kendriya Sainik Board for the cost of
treatment incurred at other hospitals as on march
31, 2007 . This help them to take care of their
medical need quite conveniently.
Defence medical services
Defence medical services there are separate
hospitals and health services system which
provide medical care to military personnal and
their family members.
Defence health services come under armed force
medical servies (AFMS) . They are responsible
for providing all preventive, promotive and
curative health services.
