the artwork
• Eg. “The subject matter or focal point of this
artwork is a human face”

• WHAT CAN YOU SEE?


• “I see a painting of a person's face. The
person has their face turned slightly with one

Keywords: Line, Shape, Colour, Tone, Space, Texture, Form.

shows a strong use
of one visual
element.
• Can you guess the
main element for
each picture?
ANALYSIS

• Choose one element that is having the most impact in the artwork
you’re writing about and explain why you think that.
• Give as much information and detail as you can using full sentences.

• For example, if my ELEMENT is COLOUR


instead of saying “It is colourful” say something like…

• “The art element that is having the most impact is colour. The artist
has used bright greens, blues, red, oranges and pink (why?) to create
emphasis on the face. This makes the image ‘standout’. It really
captures my attention as the viewer.”
ANALYSIS

• Choose one principle that is having the most impact in the artwork
you’re writing about and explain why you think that.
• Give as much information and detail as you can using full sentences.

• For example, if my PRINCIPLE is EMPHASIS


instead of saying “The face stands out” say something like…

• “The Principle of Design that is having the most impact is Emphasis.


The artist has used vibrant colours as well as a composition where the
face is the only subject matter (why?) to create emphasis. This makes
the face our only area of interest.”
