Compressed Air Validation

By Amit Gupta
compressed air systems

 compressed air is used in production and packaging.

 Compressed air systems consist of a number of major subsystems and components. Air
filters and air dryers remove moisture, oil and contaminants from the compressed air.
 Compressed air is measured in pounds per square inch gauge (psig).
Test Acceptance Criteria Frequency
1. Dew Point Test less than or equal to -40 1. All test parameter
(At Atmospheric Reference.ISO8573-1:2010) shall be analysed in six
Pressure) months for class A & B
2. Moisture Content less than 67 ppm (in house/BP)
(Water Vapour)
3. Carbon Di Oxide NMT 500 ppm (Reference : EU)

4. Carbon Monoxide NMT 5 ppm (Reference : EU) 2. All test parameters shall
be analysed in one year for
5. Nitrogen Oxide NMT 2 ppm (Reference: EU) class C & D

6. Sulphur Di Oxide NMT 1 ppm (Reference: EU)

7. Oil Mist Test less than or equal to 0.1 mg/m3

Reference.ISO8573-1:2010
8. Non-Viable Particle As per ISO 8573-1:2010
Count Test Particle size b/w 0.5 µm. to 1.0 µm. shall
be =6000.
Particle size b/w 1.0 µm. to 5.0 µm. shall
be =100.
Viable Particle Count Test

Test Acceptance Criteria Frequency

9. Total Viable Count NMT =5 CFU/M3(Grade B/Class 1. All test parameter shall
1000) be analysed in six months
NMT =25 CFU/M3(Grade C/Class for class A & B
10,000)
NMT =50 CFU/M3(Grade D/Class
100,000)

10. Sterility test Should be sterile, applicable only 2. All test parameters shall
for Grade A sampling points be analysed in one year for
class C & D
Procedure for Tests:
 1. Dew Point Test: (Equipment Used: Tek1 Dew Point Meter):
Procedure: Flush the compressed air from the user points for 2 minutes before sampling.
Connect the compressed air line to TEK1 Dew point Apparatus inlet. Put dry ice and ether in the
chamber and mix dry ice with help of stirrer. Monitor the temperature of sensor which must be
constantly lowered by addition of ice. When temperature reaches dew point, moisture will
condense. Record the temperature, this temperature is the Dew point temperature.
 2. Moisture Content Test: (Equipment Used: Gastec Detector Tube/Tek1
Mcas Eco)
Procedure: Flush the compressed air from the user points for 2 minutes before sampling.
Connect the compressed airline to apparatus inlet. Adjust the flow to 1000 ml using adjustable
valve. Break both end of Gastec tube and put it into flow meter outlet. Open the On/Off valve.
After stabilization of the reading, record the observed reading. For moisture content follow the
parameters as mentioned below:
A. Measuring range 30-80mg/m3 B. Sampling time 10 minutes
C. Sampling volume 1000ml C. Color change Yellow purple
D. Sampling rate 100ml/min
3. Carbon Dioxide Test: Equipment Used: Gastec Detector Air Tubes/ Tek1
Mcas Eco
 Procedure:
 Flush the compressed air from the user points for 02 minutes before sampling. Connect the
compressed air airline to sampling instrument. Adjust flow to 100ml/min from adjustable valve
and then close it. Break both ends of Gastec tube and put it into flow meter outlet so that the
arrow mark shows outward to the flow meter. Open valve for 2mins. For carbon dioxide follow
the parameters as mentioned below:

 Sampling volume 150ml Sampling time 90 sec

 Sampling rate 100ml/min

 Color change: Pale red----------------yellow,

Note: In case of carbon Monoxide White to pale pink

4. Nitrogen Oxide Test: (Equipment Used: Gastec Detector Air Tubes/
Tek1 Mcas Eco)
 Procedure:
 Flush the compressed air from the user points for 02 minutes before sampling. Connect
the compressed air inline to sampling instrument. Adjust flow to 100 ml/min from
adjustable valve and then close it. Break both ends of Gastec tube and put it into flow
meter outlet so that the arrow mark shows outward to the flow meter. Open valve for
2mins. For Nitrogen Oxides follow the parameters as mentioned below:

 Sampling volume 200 ml Sampling time 2 mins

 Sampling rate 100 ml/min

 Color change: White----------------------------- Yellowish orange

5. Sulphur Dioxide Test: (Equipment Used: Gastec Detector Air Tubes/
Tek1 Mcas Eco)
Procedure:
 Flush the compressed air from the user points for 02 minutes before sampling. Connect
the compressed air inline to sampling instrument. Adjust flow to 1 ml/min from
adjustable valve and then close it. Break both ends of Gastec tube and put it into flow
meter outlet so that the arrow mark shows outward to the flow meter. Open valve for 1
mins. For Sulphur dioxide follow the parameters as mentioned below:

 Sampling volume 1ml Sampling time 1 min

 Sampling rate 1 ml/min

 Color change: Yellowish green--------------------- Yellow

6. Oil Mist Test: (Equipment Used: Gastec Detector Air Tubes/ Tek1 Mcas Eco)
 Procedure:
 Flush the compressed air from the user points for 2 mins before sampling. Connect the compressed
airline to apparatus inlet. Adjust the flow to 20000ml using adjustable valve. Break both end of
Gastec tube and put it into flow meter outlet. Open the On/Off Valve. For oil mist follow the
parameters as mentioned below:

 Measuring range 0.25.0mg/m3

 Sampling rate 01 litre per minute

 Sampling volume 20000ml

 Sampling time 20 minutes

 Color change: Pale red--------------------------------------Pale blue

7. Non- Viable Particle Count Test: (Equipment Used: Digital Particle
Counter)
 Procedure:
 Flush the compressed air from the user points for 02 minutes before sampling. Make it
assembled the test kit and adjusts the flow volume at around 1 cfm per minutes. Take
the diffuser and connect the inlet of diffuser to the compressor airline and outlet of
diffuser to particle counter. Release the air from main line to diffuser and run the
particle counter as per instruction. Collect the sample

 volume at 1 CFM/m3 for each sample and take the print.
