FAMILY HEALTH CARE NURSING
Definition :
This is defined as the process of providing health
care needs of families that are within the scope of
nursing practice. This nursing care can be aimed
toward the family as context, the family as a
whole, the family as a system or family as a
component of society
(Hanson, 2005)
Determinants of Family Health
It is determined by interaction of factors, these
factors are
External Factors
Climate, water supply, air, biological and physical
environment
Internal Factors
structure, size, type, members, relationships,
biological characteristics, cultural pattern and values
Objectives of Family Health Service
Identify and appraise health problems of
family
Ensure family`s understanding and
acceptance of problems
Provide nursing services according to health
needs of family.
Promote utilization of available resources to
maintain all aspects of health of a family.
Provide health education

Reducing maternal mortality, morbidity,
infant mortality rate

Eliminate mal nutrition

Principles of Family Health Service
Community health nurse should establish good professional
relationships with family
Community nurse should have basic knowledge about size,
occupation, customs, rituals, educational standards.
Community nurse should be able to identify the needs and
problems of the family
The community health nurse should formulate the need based
support and services to the family
Encourage the families to fulfill their own needs
Should accept the participation of the family members.
Community health nurse should provide services irrespective of
sex, age, income & religion
Should create awareness about health and well being among the
family members

Health Educator:
Health education plays the important role in
implementing the elements of family health service
CHN provides health education based on the needs
of the individual and families using appropriate
audio visual aids
Example: preventive and promotive services,
MCH, Family planning services…
CHN comes in contact with people everyday, so
she acts as an educator for providing education and
leading as per needs
Motivator:
CHN motivates the community people to find their
needs, increase interest to adopt healthy lifestyle.
Increase awareness
regarding health,
sanitation, hygiene, etc…

Counselor:
CHN counsels the people as per their
needs
CHN FUNCTION as a counselor for the
individual and family.
She plays a therapeutic role in helping
individuals and families solve problems or
change behavior
Example: she provides counseling services
on family planning to the newly married
couple, immunization etc..

Health Care Provider:
CHN provides care to patients in the community by
focusing preventive and promotive care.
She also provides curative services in the community.

Supervisor:
CHN supervises subordinates, guide and
directs their actions to meet the
predetermined objectives or goals.
CHN guides teachers and evaluates the
progress of the program.

Manager:
CHN should act as a good manager and
evaluates the health programs of the
community
Change Agent:
CHN act as change agent
to change the attitude,
behavior and views of the
people towards and health
and eliminates harmful and
hazardous practices
prevalent in the family by
motivating them.

Researcher:
CHN does a scientific and systematic
investigations of problems and services of
the community so that change and
improvements are made.

Coordinator:
CHN has to coordinate with the different
sectors and get inter sectoral cooperation
for the maintenance of positive health.
She would be a key person in helping
families to access resources from inpatient
care, outpatient care, home health care and
social services to rehabilitation.
Evaluator:
CHN evaluates
the work done
and being done to
check the quality.
It is continuous
process done to
find out the
predestined goals
are fulfilled or
not.
