Free State
Vredefort Dome
This dome was created by a huge meteorite that hit
Earth over two billion years ago.
The meteorite was about the size of table mountain.
The crater it formed is 380 km wide and 16-18km deep.
It is the largest and oldest meteorite impact site in the
world and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2005.
Activities include river rafting, abseiling, horse riding,
mountain biking, hiking, visits to Angola Boer War site,
and to a distillery where ‘witblits’ is made.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park
• The 11 600 ha park gets its name from the gold colours of
the park’s sandstone cliffs.
• The park is home to black wildebeest, eland, blesbok,
springbok, zebra and the rear bearded vulture.
• Activities include hiking, game viewing, game drives,
horse-riding, environmental education courses and
recreational activities

Robben Island
• Is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where former President Nelson
Mandela spent most of his 27 years in jail. The island was
declared a World Heritage Site in 1999. Visitors can visit Nelson
Mandela’s prison cell.

and Robert Sobukwe House.
