Outline

On completion of this module students should be able to

Assign classification numbers to information sources according to the
Dewey decimal classification (DDC) system.
Specific outcomes
At the end of the workshops, you will be able to :
• Apply appropriate DDC rules to build classification numbers
• Apply DDC principles to determine the correct notation among
multiple potential base numbers

2
Outline of the presentation

• DDC conceptual framework : recap

• Number building
• Summary

3
DDC conceptual framework : recap
• Divides knowledge into 10 main classes
• Arranged by discipline not subject
• Uses notation (Arabic numerals) to represent classes and
subjects
• A minimum of three digits – first digit represents main class,
second digit represents division and third digits represents
section
• Decimal point after third digit (.)
• Notation after decimal point NEVER ends with a zero (0)

4
Class Discussion Saturday,16 March

Classification process
• DDC component
• Divides knowledge into 10 main classes
Sources of notations for number building:
• Adding from Table 1
• Adding from Tables 2-6
• Adding from other parts of the schedules
• Adding from “Add” tables in the schedule

5
Adding from Table 1: Examples
1. An encyclopaedia of psychology
2. Philosophy of language
3. An illustrated encyclopaedia of Christian doctrinal philosophy
4. The biography of nineteenth-century British scientists
5. Dictionary on primary school education
6. Journal of the curriculum
7. The lives of the painters

6
Number Building: Adding from Table 1

• Standard subdivisions with no zero

Example 1: An encyclopaedia of psychology 150.3
150 Psychology ( add standard subdivision from Table )
150.1-9 Standard subdivisions
150.3 Encyclopaedia ( See Summary under 150)

• Standard subdivision in main class

Example 2: Philosophy of Language 401
400 Language
401 Philosophy ( See Summary under 400: 401-409 standard subdivisons)
(final placeholder 00 deleted before notation added)
7
Number building: Adding from Table 1 contd.

• Standard subdivisions with more than one zero

Example 3: An illustrated encyclopaedia of Christian doctrinal philosophy. 230.003
230 Christianity
Notes: Class here Christian theology, Christian doctrinal theology…
230.002-007 Standard subdivisions
230.003 Encyclopaedias
Example 4: 371.003 Dictionary on primary school education ( 00)
Example 5: 375.000 5 Journal of curriculum (000)
Follow instructions under the notation
8
Number building: Adding from Table 1 contd.

• Table of preference
Example 4: The biography of nineteenth-century British scientists 509.2241
500 Natural sciences and mathematics
509 History, geographic treatment, biography (final placeholder 00 deleted before notation added). Add from T1
509.0922 Collected biography. Add to base number -0922 notation 3-9 from Table 2)
509.092241 British Isles ( from Table 2, as instructed at T1-0922)
Note: -092 (Biography) higher in the Table 1 table of preference than -0901-0905 (areas, regions, places in general)
• Displaced standard subdivisions
Example 5: The lives of the painters 759
750 Painting and paintings
750[.9] History, geographic treatment, biography
Do not use; class in 759
759 History, geographic treatment, biography (no further subdivision for biography given)
9
Adding from Table 2: Examples
• Libraries for the blind in France
• History of Mozambique in the 17th century
• Geography and travel in Botswana
• Guide to Sydney hotels
• Guide to bed and breakfasts in Norway
• Military relations between Russia and South Africa

10
Number Building: Adding from Table 2

• Adding T2 with T1 -09

Example 1: Libraries for the blind in France 027.6630944
027 General libraries, archives , information centers
027.663 Libraries for people with disabilities
Including libraries for people with visual impairments

027.66309 T1 -09 ( See beginning Table 2)

027.66309 44 France

11
Number building: Table 2 contd.

• Adding without T1 -09 ( Add tables in the schedule)

Example History of Mozambique in the 17th century 967.902
900 History and geography
967 *Central Africa and offshore Islands (Number built according to instruction under 930-990)
967.9 Mozambique
967.902 17th century
* Add as instructed under 930-990

Example Geography and travel in Botswana 916.88304

910 Geography and travel.
916** Geography of and travel in Africa. Add to base number 91 notation 3-9 from Table 2
916.883 Geography of Botswana; then further add as follows:
916.88304 Travel

**Number built according to instructions under 913-919 12

Number Building: Adding from Table 2

Number building patterns for Travel topics using 913-919: Add Table
• 91 + T2 + 04 subdivision from 913-919 add table + historical period
number following 0 from 930-990 schedule
• 91 + T2 + 061 from 913-919 add table + historical period number following
0 from 930-990 schedule
• 91 + T2 + 064, 066, or 068 from 913-919 add table + historical period
number following 0 from 930-990 schedule

Examples: Guide to Sydney hotels 919.44106172

Guide to bed and breakfasts in Norway 914.81064512

13
Number Building: Adding from Table 2 contd.
• Adding instructions
Example: Military relations between Russia and South Africa 355.03109470968
355 Military Science
355.031 Military relations
355.031 09 History, Geographic treatment, biography
Class here military relations between tow regions or countries…between that
nation.. as instructed under – 093-099 in Table 1
355.0310947 Russia (from Table 2, as instructed at T1 -093-099)
355.03109470968 South Africa (from Table 2, as instructed at T1 -093-099)

Note adding T1-09 when adding from T2

14
Number Building: Adding from Table 2 contd.

Notes:
Compare 324.2094-.2099 and 324.24-.29
• Political parties in specific continents, countries, localities in modern world
• Use 324.209 for treatment of political parties by continent and by region
larger than a specific country
• Use 324.24-.29 for treatment of political parties by country, using area
notation for country from Table 2, followed by notation to express the party
• Use the country number in 324.24-.29, followed by notation to express the
party, plus notation 09 from Table 1, for treatment of political parties by
locality within a country

15
Summary

• Determine subject: Pay attention to author’s intention

Consider for synonyms and related terms
• Determine disciplinary focus of subject
• Consult Relative index
• Consult the Schedules
• Go to the schedule
• Check in the hierarchy to make sure the topic is falls within the correct
discipline
• Write the number down and follow and any additional NOTES and
instructions
