WHAT ARE HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES?

• Heatstroke (Sunstroke)

• Heat Exhaustion

• Heat Collapse / Syncope (Fainting)

• Heat Cramps

• Heat Rash (Prickly Heat)


HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES

1) HEATSTROKE / SUNSTROKE

 CAUSE
 Occurs when the body’s temperature control
system fails and sweating becomes inadequate, ical
med ncy
leading to a very high body temperature. A

 SYMPTOMS
 Red, dry and very hot skin with no sweating.
 Body temperature above 400C.
 Rapid and shallow breathing.
 Headache, dizziness, and confusion.
 Loss of consciousness.
 Seizures or fits.

2) HEAT EXHAUSTION

 CAUSE
 Loss of large amounts of fluid by sweating, sometimes with
excessive loss of salt.

 SYMPTOMS
 Headaches and dizziness
 Thirst and nausea
 Weakness
 Sweating with pale, clammy skin
 Cramps in the arms, legs or abdominal
 Rapid breathing
 Decreased or dark colored urine
Normal Dark Very dark

3) HEAT SYNCOPE (FAINTING)


 CAUSE
 Temporary reduction of blood supply to the brain due to
pooling of blood in the legs as a result of standing still in a
hot climate for a long period of time

 SYMPTOMS
 Headache / dizziness
 Nausea / vomiting
 Restlessness
 A brief loss of consciousness

 ACTION
 Lie or sit down in a cool environment.
 Loosen clothing and give fluids if the person is conscious.

4) HEAT CRAMPS
 CAUSE
 Loss of too much salt through sweating.
 SYMPTOMS
 Painful muscle cramps in the legs and abdomen.
 Fatigue.
 Excessive sweating.

 ACTION
 Stop activity.
 Drink juice or oral re-hydration solution and rest in a cool
environment.
 Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

5) HEAT RASH (PRICKLY HEAT)

 CAUSE
 Blockage of sweat ducts in the skin due to
un-evaporated sweat

 SYMPTOMS
 Red papules
 Prickling sensation

 ACTION
 Stay in a cool place and avoid sweating.
 Take regular baths and carefully dry the skin.
Heat Illness Recovery
TRAINING OF PERSONNEL
CONTRACTOR and Subcontractors
will ensure that all personnel are trained
on Heat Stress Awareness.

• Heat Stress Training for all


employees by HSSE Training
Department.
• Heat Stress Awareness must be
discussed in Toolbox Talks with the
work force by the concerned
supervisors.
• HSSE Department will also
implement a Heat Stress Awareness
Campaign to ensure that the Safety
Message on Heat Stress Awareness is
communicated throughout the
workforce.
BUDDY SYSTEM

Supervisor to detail/declare the buddy in the Toolbox talk itself. If there is odd number,
then the odd number will be along with the last buddy.

Purpose of Buddy

In the event of any emergency the buddy should immediately respond and act by
means of informing to Supervisor/calling First Aider, taking necessary steps to retrieve
the victim from heat related illness.

The pair should remain together always,

• During work activities.


• During the whole tour of duty.
• While going to rest shelters, washrooms, taking food and taking rest.
• If anyone of the buddy develop any symptoms of Heat Stress immediately inform to
the concerned personnel and take necessary steps.
