Abstract
The game educates players about the severe impact of ocean pollution on marine life and
ecosystems. By interacting with the problem directly, players become more aware of the
issue and the importance of ocean conservation.
Tidy Tides aligns closely with sustainable development goals, which aims to conserve and
sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources. The game highlights the importance
of reducing marine pollution and protecting marine biodiversity. Gamifying the process of
learning about marine pollution and its solutions makes the educational experience more
engaging and memorable, particularly for younger audiences.
Introduction
Our game Tidy Tides aims to develop a game that educates players about the importance of
cleaning up ocean trash and recycling, raising awareness about marine pollution and promote
environmental conservation. The game highlights the severe issue of marine pollution, with
various types of trash, such as plastic bottles, bags, and other debris, littering the ocean floor
and floating in the water. Players must manage limited resources such as fuel, time, and
equipment durability while navigating the underwater environment to collect trash
efficiently.
SDG
Our decision to create an underwater game, “Tidy Tides," aligns with the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals, specifically SDG 14: Life Below Water. This goal emphasizes the need to
conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources. By choosing an underwater
setting, we aim to highlight the critical issue of marine pollution and its impact on biodiversity and
ecosystem health. Through immersive gameplay, “Tidy Tides" educates players about the importance
of protecting marine environments and encourages proactive behaviors to reduce pollution, fostering a
deeper connection to the oceans and a commitment to sustainable practices.
Similar Projects and Improvements
Endless Ocean Series
Similarities: Focus on underwater exploration and marine biology.
Improvements: While "Endless Ocean" primarily focuses on exploration and
interaction with marine life, our game introduces specialized mechanics for
identifying, collecting, and managing underwater trash.
Subnautica
Similarities: Underwater exploration with survival elements.
Improvements: While "Subnautica" includes survival and exploration in an
alien ocean, our game focuses specifically on the narrative of cleaning up
human-caused pollution in Earth's oceans.
