Virtual Tourist Guide 2

Abstract

The Indian tourism and hospitality industry is one of the key drivers of growth
among the service sector of India. Considering the rich cultural and historical
heritage, variety in ecology and natural attractions, tourism in India has
substantial potential. India is one of the most digitally advanced travellers
nation in terms of digital tools being used for planning, booking and
experiencing a journey. There is an extensive range of solutions in the market
that cater to needs of the tourism industry. However majority of these
solutions concentrate on either an information provider or on providing some
tourist services, and there is a lack of studies for providing unified measures to
meet both the needs. “Virtual Tourist Guide” aims to overcome these needs
and provide easy, reliable and user friendly solutions for tourism
management.

Problem statement

India is a major tourist destination as it is one of the most

religiously and ethnically diverse nations in the world. Due to
which there is high inflow of domestic and foreign tourists
who visit India. And the manpower required to guide the
tourists is not sufficient.
 Design an application for tourists which enhances the
tourism experience by providing navigation and
information sharing features.

Virtual Tourist Guide 5

Aim and Objectives of the Project

 The aim of this project is :

To make an “all in one” platform for all the
features required within an application based
tourist guide.

 Project objectives :
 To prepare an in depth study of tourist
management application.
 To prepare an application which helps the end user
know about all the information about the place or
monument before hand or after their visit or
during their visit.
 To make it easy and comfortable for the tourist to
manage the information through the use of web
Virtual Tourist Guide application by providing complete information. 6
Objectives

 The objective of this interactive virtual guide is to help

and motivate tourists to visit different and exciting
tourist places.
 To provide accurate and thorough information to the
end users.
 “Virtual Tourist Guide”, aims to help the tourist to
know the visited place in a better way.

Virtual Tourist Guide 7

Motivation

 The World Travel and Tourism Council calculated that

INDIA’s tourism sector generated 16.91 lakh crore about
9.2% of INDIA’s GDP in 2018 and the sector is predicted to
grow at an annual rate of 6.9% by the year 2028.
 Tourists are issued a printed booklet or they hire a guide.
Due to lack of current information and navigation
support, tourists are not able to visit all the attraction
during their visit.
 So, this virtual assistance to tourists can play a
significant role, to also help tourists to travel on their
own and take full advantage of the visit without missing
any main attractions.

Proposed System

Methodology :
The work presents the tour guide framework application using
expanded reality such as augmented reality in mobile based
environment to guide tourist for their tours.
This system handles limitations of the current Computer Vision
techniques that prevent the implementation of mature Augmented
Reality applications.
Thus, this application provides users, all the features on their fingertip.
Dependency :
• Data,
• internet,
• Camera and speaker.

Virtual Tourist Guide 14

Description of proposed work :
 Using mobile phone camera, click the picture of the
tourist attraction.
 Web application will make an API call for each service
that is being provided.
 The web services will respond to those calls and get back
to the application with a result which will be showcased
properly by the application with a better UI experience.
 The result will be conveyed vocally to the user.

Software Requirements

AWS Rekognition Service for Image Searching in Database:

Amazon Rekognition is a service that makes it easy to add powerful visual
analysis to your applications. Rekognition Image lets you easily build powerful
applications to search, verify, and organize millions of images.
Amazon Rekognition Image is based on the same proven, highly scalable, deep
learning technology developed by Amazon’s computer vision. Rekognition
Image uses deep neural network models to detect and label thousands of
objects and scenes in your images.
The most common use-cases for Rekognition Image include:
• Searchable Image Library
• Face-Based User Verification
• Sentiment Analysis
• Facial Recognition
• Image Moderation

Virtual Tourist Guide 16

 Amazon LEX:
 Amazon Lex is a service for building conversational interfaces into any
application using voice and text. Amazon Lex provides the advanced deep
learning functionalities of automatic speech recognition (ASR) for
converting speech to text, and natural language understanding (NLU) to
recognize the intent of the text, to enable you to build applications with
highly engaging user experiences and lifelike conversational interactions.
With Amazon Lex, the same deep learning technologies that power Amazon
Alexa are now available to any developer, enabling quickly and easily built
sophisticated, natural language conversational bots.
 Prerequisites
• AWS JavaSript SDK
• Web Audio API
• getUserMedia

Virtual Tourist Guide 17

 AJAX:
 AJAX is a technique for creating fast and dynamic web pages. AJAX
allows web pages to be updated asynchronously by exchanging small
amounts of data with the server behind the scenes. This means that it is
possible to update parts of a web page, without reloading the whole
page.

 jQuery:
 jQuery is a lightweight, "write less, do more", JavaScript library. The
purpose of jQuery is to make it much easier to use JavaScript on your
website. jQuery takes a lot of common tasks that require many lines of
JavaScript code to accomplish, and wraps them into methods that you
can call with a single line of code.

Virtual Tourist Guide 18

 React JS Framework:
 React is an open-source front-end JavaScript library for building
component based user interfaces. Making it painless to create interactive
UIs. It also efficiently update and render just the right components
when the data changes. It is maintained by Facebook and a community of
individual developers and companies.

 Django Web Application Framework:

 Django is a free and open-source high-level Python Web framework
that encourages rapid development and clean, pragmatic design. Django
provides a powerful form library that handles rendering forms as
HTML, validating user- submitted data, and converting that data to
native Python types. It is maintained by the Django Software Foundation
(DSF).

Virtual Tourist Guide 19

Summarizing the Technologies Used:

 Frontend:
 HTML, CSS and Javascript
 Ajax – to asynchronously update the page
 jQuery – for event handling
 React – frontend framework

 Backend:
 Django Web Application Framework
 Amazon Lex
 Amazon Rekognition

Scope and Analysis

 The World Travel and Tourism Council calculated that

INDIA’s tourism sector generated 16.91 lakh crores
about 9.2% of INDIA’s GDP in 2018 and the sector is
predicted to grow at an annual rate of 6.9% by the year
2028.
 By analyzing the above data, we can say that this
industry will flourish and hence our application would
be beneficial during or even before their visit.

Virtual Tourist Guide 2621

Applications

 The topic is about digitalizing the tourism sector. Our

project is to implement this noble idea in an innovative
and scalable way.
 The research paper has an information provider but
lacks the UI tool ‘chatbot’ that we would provide to
make the user experience much more interactive and
effortless.

Virtual Tourist Guide 22

Conclusions

 We studied how we will implement and develop our

application.
 This study has found that the traditional method used
has many flaws or ambiguities which can be fixed to
provide better user experience.
 This work would be implemented in our final year
project with better approach and technology to provide
better experience to the user.
