ICE ROAD TRUCKS

SURVIVAL CAMP

BY SAFI MOHSEN
Things you need to know to survive on the frosty road

Pressure means the force applied over a certain amount of area and it is calculated by pressure = force /
area

Things to remember

The ice road can withstand pressure of up to 600 N/cm^2

Truck 1 : don’t say snow to me

This truck has a weight of 450,000 N and 50,000 N of cargo so added together equals 500,000 N . Each tyre is
70cm^2 and there are 12 tyre which means 840cm^2 for the whole truck. And to work out the pressure we have
to do force / area so 500,000N / 840cm^2 = 595.2380952380952380952380952381 N/cm^2. This means it can
cross the icy lake without falling in . This is because the icy road can only take 600 N/cm^2 without breaking
the ice and since 595.23… is below 600 N/cm^2 it can pass safely
Truck 2: there’s no business like snow business

The weight of the truck is 375,000 N and the weight of the cargo is 25,000 N so the total weight is
400,000N. And the are of each tyre is 42cm^2 and there are 12 tyres so for the all of the wheels it is 504
cm^2. And to work out the pressure it exert on the ice you have to do force/area so 400,000 N / 504 is
793.65079365079365079365079365079 N/cm^2. This truck cannot make it across the icy lake as it can
only take 600 N/cm^2 of pressure and 793.65079365079365079365079365079 is over that so the lake
would collapse inwards. This could be prevented if the truck had more area on the tyres so the force of the
truck is spread out and wouldn’t break the ice .
Truck 3 : it’s Snow joke
The weight of the truck is 500000 N and the weight of the cargo is 100,000 N o the total weight is 600,000
N. And the area of each tyre is 85cm^2 and there are 12 tyres so for the whole truck it’s 1,020 cm^2. So
because pressure = force/area 600,000 N / 1020 cm^2 = 588.23529411764705882352941176471 N/cm^2 .
This means that the icy roads will not break as because the icy roads can only take 600N/cm^2 of pressure
and that is less then it .
Truck 4 : Ice to meet you

The weight of the truck is 600000n and the cargo is 150,000n so the total weight is 750000 N . The are
of each tyre is 56.25 cm^2 and there are 16 tyres so for the whole truck it’s 900 cm ^2 . So the
pressure is 833.3 recurring. This means the ice will break because the pressure is bigger than
600n.cm^2 . A way they could modify it so it could cross is by decreasing the weight or increasing the
surface area.
Truck 5 : There’s snow way I’m doing that

The weight of the truck i 300,000 N and the cargo is 250000N so the total weight is 550000 N . the area
of each tyre is 42cm^2 and there are 12 tyres so the total surface area is 504 cm ^2 . So the pressure is
1,091.269841… n/cm^2 . So this means that it cannot go across the icy road because it can only take
600N/cm^2 . It could be modified by increasing the surface area or decreasing the weight.
Truck 6 : Some like it hoth

The weight of the truck is 150,000 N and the cargo weight is 50000N so the total weight is 200000N.
The area for each tyre is 45cm^2 and there are 10 tyres tso the total surface area is 450 cm^2. So the
pressure is 444.4 recurring so it can make it across the icy road without it breaking because it can
withstand 600 n/cm^2.
Truck 7 : creepy bunny flake

The weight of the truck is 200,000 N and the cargo weight is 100000 N so the total weight is 300,000 N
. The area of each tyre is 50 cm^2 and there is 12 tyres so the total surface area is 600 cm^2. So the
pressure is 500 N/cm^2 . So it will be able to cross the icy road because it can withstand 600 N/cm^2 .
The graph to show the results

Where the icy road would

brake
Special Thanks to friction

This because without it the truck would split all over the road but the groves apply a resistive force
making it stay in place .
