Injuries are classified as intentional or unintentional
injuries.

Intentional injuries result from a purposeful


human action, directed at oneself or to others.
Examples: Suicide and homicide

Unintentional injuries
Examples: sprain, burns
Both can have short-term effects on the physical,
emotional, mental and financial aspects of a person.
TYPES OF
INTENTIONAL
INJURIES
Bullying is an unwanted, aggressive behavior. The
behavior is repeated, or can be repeated, over time.
Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may
BULLYIN have serious, lasting problems.

In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must
be aggressive and include:
•An imbalance of power: Kids who bully use their
power – such as physical strength, access to
embarrassing information, or popularity – to control
or harm others.
•Repetition: Bullying behavior happen more than
once or have the potential to happen more than once.
There are different classifications of bullying.
■ Verbal bullying – saying or writing mean and nasty things. It
includes:
– Teasing
– Name-calling
– Making inappropriate sexual comments
– Taunting
– Threatening to cause harm
■ Social bullying (sometimes referred to as relational bullying) –
hurting someone’s reputation or relationships. It includes:
– Telling other students not to be friends with someone
– Spreading rumors about someone
– Embarrassing someone in public
■ Physical bullying – hurting a person’s body or destroying his/her
possessions. It includes:
– Hitting/kicking/pinching
– Spitting
– Tripping/pushing
– Taking or breaking someone’s things
– Making mean or rude hand gestures
■ Cyberbullying – verbal and social bullying done through the use of
technology and electronic means. It includes:
– Using social media (example: Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
– Using mobile devices (example: Cellphone)
– Using electronic mails (example: e-mails)
Stalking is a pattern of behavior that makes the
victim feel nervous, afraid, harassed, or in danger

Psychotic stalker

disorders such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective '
disorder, or delusional disorder.
■ A nonpsychotic stalker can be influenced by
various psychological factors such as hostility,
obsession, anger, dependency, denial, and jealousy.
■ Moreover, the stalker knows the victim‘ s schedule and is
always present at places where the victim goes frequently
texts or calls, sends mails or emails and pictures, steals and
damages the victim's belongings, creates a web page, and
even posts about the victim on social networking sites.
Extortion is an intentional form of injury involving
EXTORTION verbal or written expression of threat or blackmail
that something bad will happen to the victim or to
any family members if the demand is not provided.
- also known as “protection racket” since the
demands for payment is for their protection from
other people’s threat.
- It is considered as a criminal act for it involves
money, property or service being requested by the
syndicate or crime group.
KIDNAPPING - unlawful holding and taking away of a
OR person against his/her will by force and
threat.
ABDUCTION - originally used as a term for the
practice of capturing children for
forced labor. Likewise, this may be
done in exchange for a ransom or in
connection with a conflict in child
custody.

GANG AND
YOUTH
VIOLENCE A gang is usually made up of groups of male
adolescents and youngsters who have grown up
together from an impoverished neighborhood or
community. They are from families having
severe problems on employment, living
conditions, and isolation and segregation from
the society and public institutions.
- The youth who joins the gang as a p\ace of
brotherhood can victimize others.
FRATERNITY – RELATED
A fraternity or brotherhood is an organization of
people in a college or at a university, united in a
relationship with common interests, activity, and
purpose.
- Hazing is an infliction of unnecessary or excessive
work to harass and embarrass a person in any of the
following forms;
- paddling on laps, knees, back of the thighs, or on
the buttocks
- slapping of the face
- eating of weird and 'unpalatable food mixed in an
absurd container
SEXUAL ABUSE AND HARASSMENT
Sexual abuse or molestation is forcing
undesired sexual behavior by the offender
upon the victim when the abuse involves
sexual intercourse, it is termed as rape and
can be interchanged with the term sexual
assault. Effects of child abuse include
shame, self-blame depression, anxiety,
trauma, sexual dysfunction, self-injury,
suicidal ideation, stress, and personality
disorder.
SUICIDE
Suicide is an intentional act of causing one’s
own death or the “act of taking one's own
life" (Carter, 2007). It is a tragic event with
strong emotional ' impact on the families of
the victims or survivors. In fact, as many as
seven Filipinos commit suicide every day.
Causes of suicide include despair,
hopelessness, mental disorders, financial
difficulties or poverty, broken relationships,
bullying, gambling, and drug or substance
abuse.
