Primus solution
EMC212019- EMC Service Recommendation (ESR): Enable the option "Enable
Deferred Service" on all DMX-3, DMX-4 and VMAX installations

At Enginuity 5772.97.88, 5773.130.90 and 5874.121.102 and later, the SymmWin Site Information
screen has the option to set "Deferred Service" as the Spare Replace method. When enabled, this
feature works in conjunction with Permanent Sparing to reduce the number of dial homes for drive
replacements.

It is an EMC Service Recommendation that this option be enabled at all NEW installations AND
enabled on all existing Symmetrix DMX-3, DMX-4, and Symmetrix VMAX Series installations after
consultation with your customer.

Caution!: Do not enable Permanent Sparing or Deferred Service on Teradata attached systems. If
Permanent Sparing is enabled in a Teradata environment and drives are swapped by Permanent
Sparing within the configuration it can cause performance issues. Refer to solution emc29946 "How to
configure the Symmetrix for Teradata"

Refer to the SSR Web Page for more information at Replenishment Process for Permanent Spares. See
also emc178997, "Symmetrix DMX-3, DMX-4, and Symmetrix VMAX: Replenishment Process for
Permanent Spares."

Primus solution
EMC261316- Symmetrix VMAX: What is Federated Live Migration (FLM)?
Federated Live Migration (FLM) is a new product that allows data to be migrated off a storage array onto
another with no downtime and no disruption to the servers connected.

Feature Description
Federated Live Migration (FLM) operates by having the new Symmetrix VMAX system assume the
identity and geometry of the donor Symmetrix DMX system and then performs a hot pull with the
donor_update Open Replicator (ORS) operation as the current data movement method between the
donor and the new array. This ensures the LUN’s ID, World Wide Name, and personality are all
transferred and presented to the hosts attached to the new Symmetrix VMAX array to which the data is
being migrated. The entire Federated Live Migration process—the data migration and host redirection—
is centrally managed using either Symmetrix Management Console or SYMCLI.

Requirements and Dependencies

• Enginuity 5875 is required on the destination Symmetrix VMAX.
• Solutions Enabler 7.2 is required for the initial GA release of FLM.
• PowerPath 4.5 or later is required for the initial GA release of FLM. Check the latest release of the E-
Lab EMC Simple Support Matrix (ESSM) for Federated Live Migration for the latest supported
environments.
• Enginuity Packs are required at Enginuity 5773 and 5671 to support FLM.
• For Enginuity 5773: As of February 2011, the required Enginuity Pack is 5773_163/0006 (Fix 55019).
• For Enginuity 5671: As of February 2011, the required Enginuity Pack is 5671_081/0011 (Fix 52908).

For more information on FLM, refer to the Technical Overview document on Powerlink (Part # 300-012-
013).

Primus solution
EMC265337- Symmetrix VMAX: What is the flag "Scsi Allow Inband Spinup" in the
IMPL INIT section of a bin file under FBA settings?

The "Scsi Allow Inband Spinup" flag is not in use at this time. It is reserved for a possible future feature
called "MAID Capable." This feature allows the code to spin down drives that are idle. Having the "Scsi
Allow Inband Spinup" flag set will cause any I/O sent to an idle "MAID" device to spin it back up.

The acronym MAID is defined as Massive Array of Idle Drives.

Primus solution
EMC265648- Symmetrix DMX-3, DMX-4, and VMAX: Can I edit the Symmetrix system
serial number on Desktop SymmWin?

Sometimes it is necessary to build multiple bin files that are exactly the same. Instead of having to
create a new bin file for each new install, it is possible to edit the Symmetrix serial number of
an existing bin and save it under a different name for each serial number.

Call the SSR Group for the process of editing the Symmetrix system serial number on Desktop
SymmWin.

Primus solution
EMC266545- Symmetrix activity changes being rejected in Change Control
Automation application (CCA5) for Enginuity and/or Registered Build information

Changes were made to the "Symmetrix Registered Build" handling in CCA5 3.1.19 implemented on
March 1, 2011. This included new rejection rules. The CCA5 automated processing rules now
encompass several automated checks in CCA related to Enginuity as this information is crucial for
CCA Symmetrix approval. If information is missing, incomplete, or incorrect, the task is automatically
rejected and the user is required to correct the information through Scenario and Save.

NOTE: For an Enginuity upgrade, there are two, or more, Enginuity assets in CCA. The checks are
applied to all of them. Be sure all are correct.

In the Primus, there is more information with a Cause and Remedy for the below Rejected Tasks.
• Task rejected: Enginuity level information is missing in this Symmetrix
• Task rejected: Enginuity level information is missing in this Change
• Task rejected: There is no Registered Build and no fix # specified in Notes for this
Symmetrix/Change
• Task rejected: The specified Registered Build does not match the Enginuity level in this
Symmetrix/Change

• If further assistance is required, contact CCA Support through the CS Helpdesk at 508-435-1000,
x70930, option #4 or by emailing Support at CCA5Feedback@[Link].

Primus solution
EMC266157- Symmetrix DMX and VMAX Series: Possible risk when submitting
CCA's and running Procedure Generator with a large lead time

Before any upgrade can occur on a customer asset a CCA project should be created if deemed
necessary by the Enhanced Procedure Generator: this ensures that proper planning has been done,
correct procedures followed, all knowledge has been applied and also minimizes the risk of failure or
impact on the customer. There are some occasions when a CCA does not need to be submitted and
this is determined by the Enhanced Procedure Generator (EPG) at the time of generating the
procedure for the activity. If the EPG determines that a CCA is not needed a CCA does not need to be
submitted.

When a user submits a CCA task for approval this task is passed through the CCA Blaze engine, this
engine validates the proposed change to the customer assets before implementing changes to
minimize risk of failure or impact to the customer. The CCA Blaze engine is constantly updated with
new issues and solutions. These issues and solutions are then highlighted to both the CCA task
owner and CCA approver when the task passes through the Blaze engine to ensure the appropriate
corrective actions are taken.

Warning: If an activity is submitted with a large lead time ( weeks in some examples) then you run
the risk of missing up to date CCA rule and advisories. Similarily if you have run the enhanced
Procedure Generator weeks in advance you could also miss additions and advisories for EPG.

Best Practice is to run the EPG and submit for CCA approval in a timely fashion . Refer to CSP-2021
for timing guidelines.

Primus solution
EMC251583- Symmetrix DMX-3, DMX-4, and VMAX: Running a SymmWin simulation
on the laptop results in the following Redbox: Script Exception Occurred

Running online configuration change simulation on laptop SymmWin.

The red box "Script Exception Occurred" can happen if the SymmWin on the laptop is not in the C:\
root directory. So for example, if you make a folder on your laptop called C:\codes\5874 and install
SymmWin, it may be too far down in the directory structure and some form of the red box mentioned
above can happen.

Install SymmWin on your laptop directly into the C:\ root directory. (For example:- c:\SW5874242191)

Script 00000991: Message 0x0000708E.0x10AA:

Primus solution
EMC266271- Symmetrix VMAX: 5875.135.91: The first Configuration Change or Fast
IML after April 3rd, 2011 can cause host timeouts and data integrity issues
Starting with a Pre-GA version of 5875 code, every type of Fast IML performs a cache control slot data structure
conversion adding the Thin device number in the slot data structure to speed up the recount of WP slot of THIN
devices.
The conversion was designed to be done once in the life of the box.
When the conversion has been completed the conversion Time Stamp is written in GM.
During each Fast IML the code compares the director timer with the conversion Time Stamp in GM, if the diff is less
than one minute it performs the conversion again.
This logic was implemented to cover the case where a director died in the middle of the conversion.

Starting on April 3rd 2011, the clock of the director (DIR_TIME_STAMP) started wrapping around causing the code to
perform an unnecessary second conversion.
Performing a second conversion is not an issue by itself. The problem is that the directors don’t do a synchronized
conversion so we could end up with one director completing the conversion before the others and it could update
control slot information (like setting WP indication) when another director is in the process of converting the slot.
This race condition creates a situation where the control slot lost the WP indication even if the data slot has the WP
data on it.

Every array that already logged an A410 error has or performed a Fast IML after 10:42 AM, April 3rd 2011 is no longer
exposed. Any array that performed an NDU from 5874 to 5875 after 4/3/11 is not exposed.

Recovery: If you encounter the issue escalate to the PSE Lab. After the recovery is done, data integrity should be
checked.
Workaround / Prevention: SYR has determined a list of arrays that are exposed, and SRs have been opened. If an
SR was not opened, the array was determined not to be exposed. Fix 57881, released at 5875.139.93, will
also prevent this issue.

Primus solution
EMC266769- Invoke Permanent Sparing for all drive replacements where possible

Permanent sparing is enabled by the Procedure Wizard Option B Replace Disk Drive ( Permanent
Sparing)
The goal is to reduce time to resolve and any DU/DL exposure to customers.
This reduces the time the FSS representative has to spend onsite for the drive replacement.
It reduces unnecessary calls from the field teams to enable permanent sparing.
This enables faster copy process for permanent sparing rather than having to copy to the new drive.

For all drive replacements where possible invoke permanent sparing for any drive replacement prior
to dispatch
