COMPUTER INPUT

DEVICES
Meaning
They are devices through which the
computer receives data signals. They
include

1. Keyboard : this is the most common
computer input device. A standard
keyboard is divided into five
sections:
i. Numeric keys: functions correctly
when the Num lock key is
pressed.
iii. Cursor-control keys(or text editing
keys): e.g. Arrow, Page up, Page
down, Home etc 
iv. Function keys: used for initiating
commands depending on the
application. They range from F1 to F15
depending on the type of keyboard.
v. Special keys: they include PrntScr,
pause or break, window, power, alt,
ctrl and toggle keys
Classification of Keyboards
Keyboards are classified based on
three factors:
I. Types of keys
II. Means of connection to the
system
III. Connection port
Classification based on types
ofOrdinary
1. keys keyboard: an old type
with just about ten function keys and
limited special keys.
2. Standard key board: It is designed
with the QWERTY model and has up to
twelve function keys.
3. Enhanced keyboard: has at least
twelve function keys and more special
keys.
4. Super-enhanced keyboard: has up to 15
function keys and additional keys and
buttons.

Classification based on means of connection


1. Corded keyboard 2. wireless keyboard
Classification based on the Connection Port
1. Ps/2 keyboard: has Ps/2 pin attachment.
Warm booting is necessary.
2. Serial keyboard: has serial port attachment.
Warm booting is necessary.
3. USB keyboard: has USB Port attachment.
Warm booting is unnecessary.
2. Light pen (or wand):
It is used to draw on computer screen.

3. Scanner : reads printed data (esp. pictures )


into the computer. There are different types of
scanners such as the Hand-held, sheet-fed and
flat-bed scanners.

data from magnetic strip cards
(as in access code to a building or
machine).

5. Pointing devices:
They are used for pointing, and
controlling on-screen programs
and objects e.g. mouse, joystick,

6. Sensors : used to enter data
