SEARCH ENGINE

INTRODUCTION
There are millions of websites on the World
Wide Web (WWW). How you can search a
particular web page out of billion of pages ???
Answer is !!!
WHAT IS SEARCH ENGINE?
 Search engines are basically a web based
tool that enables the users to find
information on the world wide web.
HISTORY OF SEARCH ENGINES
 Archie was the first well developed search engine in the
year 1990. It used to search files by matching their
names and indexing on FTP server.
 In 1992 Veronica search engine was developed
for Gopher based websites.
 Later in 1993 W3Catalog and Aliweb were formed
which were web search engines. WebCrawler search
engine was the first to allow users search keywords.
 Finally in 1994, the search engine Yahoo! was developed
which gained immense popularity. Earlier it was just a
directory but in 1995 search feature was also added.
 In 1998 when Google was founded as till now is the
most used and preferred browser all across the globe.
However, there have been other frequently used search
engines formed after google like, Baidu, Bing,
Yandex, etc.
FEATURES OF SEARCH ENGINE
 Language translation.
 Update information.

 Quick search

 Relevant result.

 Offer excellent spell checking, easy access to

dictionary definitions, integration of stock

quotes, street maps, and more.
 Option to find more web pages, i.e. similar

pages
 Each search engine has its own catalog or

database of collected web pages, so you will

get different results by using different search
engines.
TYPES OF SEARCH ENGINE
 Crawler based search engines
 Human powered directories

 Hybrid search engines

 Other special search engines

CRAWLERS
These types of search engines use a "spider" or a
"crawler" to search the Internet. The crawler digs
through individual web pages, pulls out keywords and
then adds the pages to the search engine database.

Google and Yahoo are examples of crawler search

engines
Advantage of crawlers are
 They contain a huge amount of pages.

 Ease of use.

 Familiarity. Most people who search the Internet are familiar

with Google.

Disadvantages to crawlers:
 Sometimes, it's just too much information.

 It is easy to trick the crawler. Websites have hidden data that

can be manipulated to make the page appear like it's
something it's not. So, that search result for Descartes might
actually take you to a unsecure site.

 Page rank can be manipulated. While search engine

companies frown on the practice, there are ways to improve
where your page appears on the list of results.
Human Powered Directories
Human powered directories also referred as open
directory system depends on human based
activities for listings.
 Site owner submits a short description of the site to the
directory along with category it is to be listed.
 Submitted site is then manually reviewed and added in the
appropriate category or rejected for listing.
 Keywords entered in a search box will be matched with the
description of the sites. This means the changes made to
the content of a web pages are not taken into
consideration as it is only the description that matters.
 A good site with good content is more likely to be reviewed
for free compared to a site with poor content.
Yahoo! Directory and DMOZ were perfect examples
of human powered directories.
HYBRIDS

 Hybrids are a mix of crawlers and

directories. Sometimes, you have a choice
when you search whether to search the Web
or a directory. Other times, you may receive
both human powered results and crawler
results for the same search. In this case, the
human results are usually listed first.
Other Types of Search Engines

 Search engines have different types of bots for

exclusively displaying images, videos, news,
products and local listings. For example, Google
News page can be used to search only news
from different newspapers.
 Some of the search engines like Dogpile

collects meta information of the pages from

other search engines and directories to display
in the search results. This type of search
engines are called meta search engines.
 Semantic search engines like Swoogle provide

accurate search results on specific area by

understanding the contextual meaning of the
search queries.
HOW TO SEARCH ON WEB
Web Server

 The primary function of a web server is to store,

process and deliver web pages to clients.
 The communication between client and server
takes place using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol
(HTTP). Pages delivered are most frequently HTML
documents, which may have images, style sheets
and scripts in addition to the text content. The
process is an example of the client/server model.
 All computers that host Web sites must have Web
server programs. Leading Web servers include
Apache (the most widely-installed Web server),
Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS),
Google Web Server (GWS) and IBM's family of
Domino servers.
WORLD WIDE WEB(WWW)
 The World Wide Web was invented by a British
scientist, Tim Berners-Lee in 1989.
 World Wide Web, which is also known as a Web, is a
collection of websites or web pages stored in web
servers and connected to local computers through
the internet.
 These websites contain text pages, digital images,
audios, videos, etc.
 Users can access the content of these sites from
any part of the world over the internet using their
devices such as computers, laptops, cell phones,
etc.
 The WWW, along with internet, enables the retrieval
and display of text and media to your device.
Basic WWW Concepts

BROWSER -- A WWW browser is software on

your computer that allows you to access the
World Wide Web. Examples include Netscape
Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
HYPERTEXT AND HYPERMEDIA –
Hypertext is text that contains electronic links
to other text. If you click on hypertext it will
take you to other related material.
Most WWW documents contain more than just
text like pictures, sounds, animations, and
movies are called hypermedia.
HTML (HYPERTEXT MARKUP LANGUAGE) --
HTML is a set of commands used to create world
wide web documents. If you wanted to create
your own web page, you would need to know
HTML.

URL (UNIFORM RESOURCE LOCATOR) –

 In order to link to another document or item

(sound, picture, movie), it must have an

address called its URL.
 The URL identifies the host computer name,

directory path, and file name of the item.

 It also identifies the protocol used to locate the

item such as hypertext, gopher, ftp, telnet or

news. For example, URL of the main page of
Microsoft is https://www.microsoft.com
 HTTP (HYPERTEXT TRANPORT PROTOCOL) --
HTTP is the protocol used to transfer hypertext or
hypermedia documents.

HOME PAGE –
 A home page is usually the starting point for locating

information at a WWW site. Currently, the home page

for your college web site is located at
https://www.prestigegwl.org/

CLIENTS AND SERVERS –

 If a computer has a web browser installed, it is known

as a client. A host computer that is capable of

providing information to others is called a server. A
server requires special software in order to provide
web documents to others.
