What is MACRO SKILL?
MACRO SKILLS are the primary, core or
main skill sets involved in a particular
context.
They are often considered the foundation
upon which other, more specific skills are
built.

What is LISTENING?
LISTENING is a prerequisite to understanding. It is the
skill of grasping and decoding information during the
exchange of messages. It is the beginning of
understanding and a key to effective communication. It
is the task of getting the meaning of what is being
heard (Underwood, 2009).

 Receiving and interpreting messages: Students learn
to comprehend spoken language in various contexts, from
casual conversations to formal presentations.
 Developing listening comprehension: They practice
active listening, identifying main ideas, supporting details,
and inferring information.
 Responding appropriately: Students are taught to
respond effectively to what they hear, demonstrating
understanding and engagement.

What is SPEAKING?
SPEAKING involves using oral language to
communicate thoughts, ideas and feelings. It

encompasses various aspects like pronunciation,


fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and nonverbal
communication.
It is a complex cognitive and linguistic skill that
involves words and sounds.

 Expressing ideas clearly and effectively: Students
develop oral communication skills for different
purposes and audiences.
 Participating in conversations: They learn to

engage in discussions, debates, and group work,


expressing their opinions and ideas confidently.
 Delivering oral presentations: Students develop
public speaking skills, organizing their thoughts and
delivering information in a clear and engaging manner.

What is READING?
READING is a multifaceted process involving
word recognition, comprehension, fluency and
motivation. This allow readers to integrate the
facets to make meaning from the print. (Leipzig,
2001)

 Decoding and comprehending text: Students learn to
read fluently and accurately, understanding the meaning
of words and sentences.
 Analyzing and interpreting texts: They develop critical
thinking skills to analyze different text types, identify main
ideas, and draw inferences.
 Responding to texts: Students learn to express their
understanding and reactions to what they read through
various forms, such as writing, discussion, or creative
projects.

What is WRITING?
WRITING involves using written language to
convey meaning and express ideas. It includes
skill like grammar, vocabulary, organization,
coherence and style.
Good writing skills may increase the chances of a
person’s success.

 Generating ideas and organizing thoughts:
Students develop writing skills to express their ideas
clearly and coherently.
 Using language effectively: They learn to use

appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics to


convey their message.
 Writing for different purposes and audiences:
Students practice writing various text types, such as
narratives, informative essays, and persuasive
arguments.

What is VIEWING?
VIEWING allows the students to pause, reflect and think
about the images they are seeing and analyze or

evaluate further these visuals for better use. It includes


giving meaning to the images or visuals and even with
computer programs and websites which have printed
and spoken words.

Types of Viewing
Visual Literacy - skill to decipher the meaning from
visuals (Georgis, 1999)
Ability to create visuals to convey effectively the ideas in

mind (Valmont, 2003; Heinish, 1999)

Critical Viewing - skill to understand and evaluate


information from visuals.
Ability to analyze the composition of the picture.

 Interpreting visual messages: Students learn to
understand and analyze visual information presented in
various forms, including images, videos, and
multimedia.
 Evaluating visual texts: They develop critical
viewing skills to assess the effectiveness and purpose
of visual messages.
 Creating visual products: Students learn to
communicate ideas visually through drawings,
diagrams, presentations, and other visual formats.
