Major Ethnic Groups in South Africa

Introduction to South
Africa's Ethnic Diversity

● South Africa is known for its rich ethnic


diversity.
● There are four main ethnic groups: Black
South Africans, Coloured South Africans,
White South Africans, and Asian South
Africans.
● Each group has unique customs and
traditions.
Black South Africans

● Black South Africans make up about 80%


of the population.
● They include groups like Zulu, Xhosa,
Basotho, and others.
● Known for crafts like beadwork, weaving,
and pottery.
● Many follow Christianity but also believe in
ancestral spirits.
Coloured South Africans
● Coloured South Africans are about 9% of the population.
● They have mixed ethnic backgrounds including Griqua, Black,
White, Chinese, and Malay.
● Mostly found in the Cape region and speak Afrikaans.
White South Africans

● Descendants of European settlers from


Dutch, French, German, and English
backgrounds.
● Many are called Afrikaners or Boers and
speak Afrikaans.
● Known for promoting racial segregation
during apartheid.
● Mostly Christians with European cultural
roots.
Asian South Africans

● Indian South Africans came to farm and


harvest crops.
● Chinese South Africans arrived to work in
gold mines about 50 years ago.
● They maintain their own traditional cultural
beliefs.
Zulu Culture

● The Zulu are the largest ethnic group in


South Africa.
● Known for their vibrant traditional dress
and beadwork.
● Famous for the energetic Zulu dance.
● They celebrate the annual Reed Dance
festival.
Xhosa Traditions

● The Xhosa are known for their unique


language with click sounds.
● Traditional dress includes colorful

Basotho Heritage
