Arithmetic Progression: Sum of N Terms
Arithmetic Progression: Sum of N Terms
PROGRESSION
SUM OF N TERMS
As we know,
An Arithmetic Progression (AP) is a
sequence of numbers in which the
difference between consecutive terms is
constant.
Key Terms of AP:
• a: First term of the AP
• d: Common difference between
consecutive terms
• n: Number of terms in the AP
• l: Last term of the AP
• S: Sum of the first nnn terms of the AP
●General Form: a,(a+d),
(a+2d),…,[a+(n−1)d]
●Sum of Terms:
● The formula for the sum of
the first n terms,
S, is given by:
Sn=a+(a+d)+(a+2d)+…+[a+
(n−1)d]
Reverse sequence: Consider the AP
written in reverse order
Sequence:
[a+(n−1)d],[a+(n−2)d],…,(a+d),a
ReversedSequence:
Sn=[a+(n−1)d]+[a+(n−2)d]+…+(a+d)
+a
Sn+Sn = [a+(a+(n−1)d)]+[(a+d)+
(a+(n−2)d)]+…+
[(a+(n−1)d)+a]
2Sn=[2a+(n−1)d]+[2a+(n−1)d]+
…+[2a+(n−1)d]
Simplifying:
2Sn = n[2a+(n−1)d]
•Deriving the Sum:
• Sn=n/2[2a+(n−1)d]
Sn=n/2[a+ l]
•Points to remember for an AP when:
=3+36
=39
•Sum (S): S10=10/2(3+39)=5⋅42=210
