ARITHMETIC

PROGRESSION
SUM OF N TERMS
As we know,
An Arithmetic Progression (AP) is a
sequence of numbers in which the
difference between consecutive terms is
constant.
Key Terms of AP:
• a: First term of the AP
• d: Common difference between
consecutive terms
• n: Number of terms in the AP
• l: Last term of the AP
• S: Sum of the first nnn terms of the AP
●General Form: a,(a+d),
(a+2d),…,[a+(n−1)d]

●Sum of Terms:
● The formula for the sum of
the first n terms,
S, is given by:

Sn=a+(a+d)+(a+2d)+…+[a+
(n−1)d]
Reverse sequence: Consider the AP
written in reverse order

Sequence:
[a+(n−1)d],[a+(n−2)d],…,(a+d),a

Note that This sequence is the same as

the original AP, but the terms are written
in the opposite order.
now, lets add the both
equations:
Original Sequence: Sn=a+
(a+d)+(a+2d)+…+[a+(n−1)d]

ReversedSequence:
Sn=[a+(n−1)d]+[a+(n−2)d]+…+(a+d)
+a
Sn+Sn = [a+(a+(n−1)d)]+[(a+d)+
(a+(n−2)d)]+…+
[(a+(n−1)d)+a]

2Sn=[2a+(n−1)d]+[2a+(n−1)d]+
…+[2a+(n−1)d]

Simplifying:
2Sn = n[2a+(n−1)d]
•Deriving the Sum:
• Sn=n/2[2a+(n−1)d]

• As we already know that l = 2a+(n−1)d,

we can write the above equation as:

Sn=n/2[a+ l]
•Points to remember for an AP when:

(i) a, n, and l are known, take its sum

S = n/2 (a+l)

(ii) a, n and d are known, take

S = n/2[2a + (n-1)d]
•But what is the need of a formula to
find sum of terms in arithmetic
progression?

Consider the following example:

Calculate the sum of the first 10 terms of
the AP 2,4,6,…
•Steps:
1.Write out all terms: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14,
16, 18, 20
2.Add terms manually:
2+4+6+8+10+12+14+16+18+20=110
•You would have observed that this
process of adding each term manually is
difficult and even time consuming.

•For large n, manually adding terms becomes

impractical.

•Example: Sum of the first 100 terms.

•Writing and adding each term is tedious and inefficien

Therefore, using a formula is efficient and time

effective
●Consider the following
example:
●Find the sum of the first 10
terms of the AP: 3,7,11,15,…
●Solution:
●First te rm (a) = 3
●Common difference (d) = 4
●Number of terms (n) = 10
●Last term (l) = a+
(n−1)d=3+9*4

=3+36
=39
•Sum (S): S10=10/2(3+39)=5⋅42=210

•Answer: The sum of the first 10 terms is

210.
