INSTITUTIONALIZATIO

N OF CURRICULUM
 Curriculum implementation is a dynamic
process that involves translating
educational goals into actionable teaching
and learning process. However, simply
introducing a new curriculum is not
enough. For successful and sustainable
change, curriculum implementation
requires a process of institutionalization-
embedding it deeply within the fabric of
the educational institution.
INSTITUTIONALIZATION
 Is the act of establishing something as a
convention or norm in an organization or
culture. It is a term used by Miles (1983),
to refer a process leading to the
innovation at which to have become a
built in or accepted part school’s
curriculum.
CURRICULUM
 Refers to the lessons and academic content taught
in a school or in a specific course or program.

 Is a standard-based sequence of planned

experiences where students practice and achieve
proficiency in content and applied learning skills.

 Curriculum is a continuous reconstruction, moving

from the learner’s present experience out into that
represented by the organized bodies of truth that
we call studies” -John Dewey
INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF
CURRICULUM
 The instructional level curriculum is
developed by the classroom teacher. The
teacher sets the learning outcomes
keeping in view his actual experience of
the learners. It is based on the practical
knowledge of the learners and the locality.
However, it may lack the depth and
breadth. The effective teachers develop
the curriculum that is also aligned to
national policy and standards.
 Institutionalization tools in concern in an
organization shift from efficiency to
formality. Seen from point of view,
Institutionalization is an attempt to
reconstruct the temple a moral community
from the cupboard. Another point of view,
Institutionalization is a sacrifice of
productive activities to political pressures.
DO WE WANT OUR
CURRICULUM TO BECOME
“INSTITUTIONALIZED”?

“When we begin using a new curriculum,

teachers want to get to the point where they
have institutionalized the process, so that it
becomes a routine” -Mourlam
