Introduction: Sleep

Quality
Sleep is a physiological phenomenon that is influenced
by the scientific advancement and cultural practices of
society.
Sleep which is directly related to health and quality of
life, is a basic need for a human being to continue his
bio-psycho-social and cultural function.
Feeling Energetic and fit after sleeping is described as
the Sleep Quality.
Sleep Quality
•A deep understanding of what “sleep quality” means requires a cross domain
investigation, In fact, the human sleep behaviour, and consequently, its sleep
characteristics relies on several factors, both physiological and mental.
•Sleeping disorder is a common health problem among adolescents and young
adult.
•There are several myth and beliefs regarding ideal sleep. An old age proverbial
saying mention, “Early to bed, early to rise makes on healthy and wise”. Fact is,
sleep behaviour is quite contrary to this saying.
•There is a general belief that medical students don’t sleep enough. It has been
reported that the amount and quality of the sleep of medical students has been
changed in past few decades and the sleep disorders has been inclined.
•In the related researches is found that sleeping disorders among the medical
students in various frequencies and amount.
•Low quality of sleep harms not only the academic success but also behavioural and
emotion problem, negative emotional status, increase alcohol and smoking habits.
•In another researches, it has been found that, there is a link between sleep quality
and psychological well being, more psychological diseases are observed among
medical students with low sleep quality.
Sleep is a rapidly reversible state of
reduced responsiveness motor activity
and metabolism, sleep differs from
unconsciousness and anaesthesia in that
it has a characteristics cycle of sleep
phases with specific
EEG(Electroencephalogram) patterns
and physiological changes such as
oculomotor activity, limb movement.

Physiology of Medical students may have sleep issues

Sleep
due to their program being though, time
and effort requiring. Because of this
matter, students who can’t sleep enough
may have various physical, social,
psychological problems.

Therefore, it is much more important to


indicate the sleep quality of the students
and the factors affecting.
