INTRODUCTION TO HEAVY MACHINERY
INSPECTION
Employers must establish a Heavy Machinery Management Program
aimed at ensuring that Heavy Machinery is always in good and safe
working condition. When setting up this management program, the
following aspects should be considered, but are not limited to:

Daily Inspections
 Reporting and Recording Damage
 Maintenance and Periodic Inspection Schedule
 Maintenance Records
 Training for Operators on Conducting Inspections

Presented by : PLANT AND MACHINERY INSPECTION

MOHD AZHARI COURSE _By AZHARI
ABDUL RASHID
PURPOSE OF INSPECTION

Employers must establish procedures for conducting daily inspections of

each piece of heavy machinery to identify any damage and take
immediate corrective action. The aim is to ensure that the machinery is
in a safe condition before operation.

Daily inspections should –

a) Ensure that each driver is responsible for performing an initial

inspection of the heavy machinery before use.;

b) nsure that the person conducting the inspection can certify that the
heavy machinery is in a safe condition for use.;

c) Define the minimum requirements for inspections to ensure

thoroughness.;

d) Ensure that each driver is responsible for performing a final

inspection at the end of each work shift. This inspection should cover
all parts of the heavy machinery, similar to the initial inspection.

 Before the engine is started.
 The machinery should be on a flat surface, the engine turned off
(during pre- and post-operation inspections), the parking brake
engaged, and the tires or tracks blocked with special wooden chocks to
prevent the machinery from moving.
 Conduct inspections by referring to the checklist, and any issues found
on the machinery must be recorded in the Checklist and Log Book.
 Daily inspections by the operator ensure that the machinery is in good
condition and safe to use.

STARTING THE ENGINE
When starting the engine of the machine, the operator should:

 Understand the method for cranking the engine.

 Check and interpret the warning indicators on the instrument panel.

ENSURING ENGINE FUNCTION

When the machine's engine is running, the operator should ensure:

 The instrument panel displays that the machine's functions are in

good condition.
 The engine speed is tested from low to high.
 No unusual noises are coming from the engine.
 The condition of the exhaust smoke is identified.

WARNING INDICATORS ON THE CONTROL DISPLAY

IDENTIFYING WARNING INDICATORS ON THE DISPLAY

 TYPES OF DISPLAY SYMBOLS consist of various symbols that need to be

understood and their functions. These symbols depend on the type and model of
the machinery used. Below are the symbols on the control panel:

o Fuel Level
o Indicates the fuel level. If it lights up, it
1
means the fuel is low and needs to be
refilled.

o Cooling System Temperature

o Indicates the temperature level of the
engine/radiator coolant. If this light
2
comes on, it means the engine is
overheating and more coolant needs to
be added.

Presented by :
MOHD AZHARI PLANT AND MACHINERY INSPECTION
COURSE _By AZHARI
ABDUL RASHID
o Hydraulic System Temperature
o Indicates the temperature level of the
3 hydraulic oil. If this light comes on, it
means the oil is too hot (overheating)
and additional oil may need to be added.

o Engine Oil Pressure

o Indicates the engine oil pressure. If this
4
light comes on, it means the engine oil
level is low and needs to be refilled.

o Air Filter
o Indicates the air filter condition. If this
5 light comes on, it means the air filter is
too dirty and needs to be cleaned or
replaced.
