Definition of Rational Functions
A rational function, is a function of the form

 where and are polynomial functions and

 the domain of is a set of real numbers such that is not
zero.

The following are examples of rational functions:
1.

Both numerator and denominator are polynomial functions.

Denominator has restriction because it should not be equal to zero.

Note: If the denominator is equal to zero, mean undefined.

The following are examples of rational functions:
2.

Both numerator 1 is a polynomial function with a degree 0.

Denominator is a polynomial function and it must not be equal to 0.

Note:: If the denominator is equal to zero, mean undefined.

3. The distance from Manila to Baguio is around 250 kilometers.
a. How long will take you to get to Baguio if your average speed is 25
kilometers per hour? 40 kilometers per hour? 50 kilometers per hour?
b. Construct a function where the speed of travel, that describes the
time it takes to drive from manila to Baguio?
Solution a:
 250 km / 25 km per hour = 10 hours
 250 km / 40 km per hour = 6.25 hours
 250 km / 50 km per hour = 5 hours

Solution b:
• Since time is the quotient of distance and speed, we can write out the function as
• The distance is fixed at 250 kilometers so the final function we have is
