PRESENTATION ON

CYCLOID
Imagine selecting a point on the edge of a car wheel (drawn as a small white
dot). Then, push the wheel, allowing it to roll along a flat surface, in a
straight line, for one revolution. The path traced out by the white dot (your
selected point), follows a curve called a cycloid.
CYCLOID, WHAT IS IT?

A cycloid is a curve generated by a point

on the circumference of the circle as the
circle rolls along a straight line without
slipping. The moving circle is called the
“generating circle” and the straight line
is called the directing line or the
“baseline”. The point on the generating
circle which generate the curve is called
the “generating point”
TYPES OF CYCLOID

NORMAL, CURTATE, PROLATE,

EPICYCLOID, HYPOCYCLOID.

Geometric
construction

STEP 1
Construct the generating circle and the base
line equal to the circumference of the
generating circle. (eg baseline 40mm,
circumference 40)
STEP 2
Divide the circle and base line into an equal
number of parts (eg 12 parts) by drawing radii
at equal angles. Also erect the perpendicular
lines from the divisions of line.
STEP 3
With your compass set to the radius of the
circle and center as C1,C2,C3 etc. Cut the
arcs on the lines from the circle through 1,2,3
etc
STEP 4
Locate the points which are produced by
cutting arcs and join them by a smooth curve.
STEP 5
By joining these new points you will have
created the locus of the point P for the circle
as it rotates along the straight line without
slipping.
Mathematical construction
of cycloid
• Parametric Equation
Use the parametric equations of a cycloid:
x(t)=r(t−sin(t))
y(t)=r(1−cos⁡(t))
Here, 𝑟 is the radius of the circle, and 𝑡 is a
parameter that varies (typically from 00 to 2 𝜋
for one complete revolution).
Using a
string and
wheel
•Attach a string to a
point on the
circumference of a
wheel and roll the
wheel along a straight
path.
•As the wheel rolls, the
string can be used to
trace the path of the
point on the
circumference.

point and you will
have the Tangent.
How to find tangent and normal
1. Mark point M at any point(distance 40mm) from the line PA.
2. Draw an arc with M as center, radius= 20mm,cuts the line CB at
cm.
3. Draw a perpendicular at cm, meets the line PA at N.
4. Join MN, which is the normal to the curve at M.
5. Draw a perpendicular (SMT) to the line MN at M, which is a
tangent.
