Getting the most out of your
cycle counting
HP Genuine Long Life
Consumables
5
Primary factors that impact yield
Job length: Each time a print job is started, there are several rotations (or
cycles) of the printing system. They happen before and after printing is
complete for set-up and reset purposes. These extra cycles are required
for each job regardless of the job length. Running many short jobs will
consume more cycles, while fewer, longer jobs will consume less.
Single- vs. double-sided printing: To print on both sides of a page, the
paper must travel a longer distance while the printed side of the page is
reversed. This also causes more rotations, which results in more wear of
printer components as the page is flipped.
Mono/color page mix: The type of job being printed affects which
components will wear. In monochrome mode, the wear on the CMY
components can be reduced.
6
Other non-printing activities
•Calibration frequency: Device calibration optimizes the imaging system to
ensure crisp, clear output. Calibrations create a small amount of wear on
the printer components. Usage modes that have relatively more
calibrations per page printed will have somewhat reduced yields (e.g.,
pause times, job length, or changing environmental conditions).
•Adjustments for media type: Switching between paper types (e.g., plain
office to heavy glossy) causes a period of adjustment to the imaging
system that may include increased cycle usage during the change.
•Media source tray: Printing from different media trays may incur extra
cycles for the first page printed of a job. For short jobs, these extra cycles
are a larger percentage of all cycles.

The Service Cost Document for each product will be updated soon to add cycle capacity to the “Mainten
