INTRODUCTION

 Mortar and pestle usage dates back to ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt.
 Initially made of stone, wood, or metal
 Over time, design and materials evolved, adapting to technological advancements.
 Mortar and pestle machines are now utilized in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, food
processing, and chemistry.
 Despite modernization, traditional mortar and pestle remain in use, valued for their simplicity and
effectiveness in grinding and mixing.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
 There are many mortar and pestle grinding machines in market but they are
useful only for big scale production.

 Portable mortar & pestle grinding machines available market are not cost
efficient and thus cannot be used for small scale production.

 As machines available have complex mechanism which are not easy to

operate.

 Extra operator is needed for observing the missing and fineness of the
powder.

 Fixed number of rotations are given.

OBJECTIVE
 To upgrade the use of mortar and pestle in ayurvedic clinic.

 To ensure consistent particle size and texture in the ground material for reliable
results.

 To be user-friendly and accessible to individuals with varying levels of skill and

experience.

 To provide a cost-effective solution compared to other grinding alternatives,

considering factors such as initial investment, maintenance, and operational
costs.

 Decrease in the extra cost of operator or observer

LITERATURE SURVEY
 Components :- Mortar and Pestle, Electric Motor ,Connecting rod ,Clamp ,Disc ,
Supporting frame.

 Operation : -The substance to be ground is placed in the mortar, and the pestle
is reciprocated at given speed to crush and grind it into a fine powder or paste.

 Uses : -Mortar grinding machines are commonly used in the

pharmaceutical and chemical industries to grind and mix ingredients for various
applications, including drug formulations, food production, and cosmetics
manufacturing
WORKING OF MECHANISM
Rotary Input applied. Disc drives connecting rod.

Reciprocating motion generates in connecting rod.

Slider moves back and forth.

Pestle attached with the help of clamp also reciprocates.

Pestle grinds material against mortar surface

Reciprocating motion continues until power off

SPECIFICATIONS

 SELECTION OF MATERIAL FOR MORTAR AND PESTLE MACHINE – As the main

purpose of designing this machine is to make it use in ayurveda. So the material used in mortar is
GRANITE.

 SIZE OF MATERIAL – To withstand the frictional force the inner diameter base of mortar will
be of 150mm. Height of pestle will be 130mm and diameter will be 50 mm.

 MOTOR used is of 120W and VOLTAGE required is of 12V.

 Required RPM for pestle to grind is 2-10 RPM.

 GRAIN SIZE as an input will be upto 5mm.

 The gap between the pestle and mortar is adjustable.

DIMENSIONS OF THE PARTS
 Supporting Frame 30×31cm
 Crank Diameter 3cm
 Connecting rod 50cm
 Hole diameters on disc 1cm; 3 cm distance between them
 Clamp Inner diameter = 8cm
Outer diameter = 9cm
 Pin hole Inner diameter = 1cm
Outer diameter = 2cm
CALCULATION OF TORQUE
D = 25cm
∴Speed =
F1 = Force under gravity
F1 = 15

F2 = Force under acceleration

F2 = 15

TORQUE = 149
= 1.8 N.m
WORKING OF PROTOTYPE
ADVANTAGES
 Efficient : - The machine delivers consistent and high-quality results, even when
handling large quantities of materials.

 Accurate : - The machine grinds materials to a precise size and shape, ensuring that
they meet specific requirements.

 Cost-effective : - The machine is durable and requires minimal maintenance,

making it a cost-effective solution for industrial processes.

 Faster dissolution: Solid particulates often have to be dissolved in solvents. The

larger chunks take longer to dissolve than the smaller ones. For this reason, scientists
need a mortar and pestle to bring down the sizes of solids and speed up the
dissolution.
CONCLUSION

 In conclusion, the integration of a slider-crank mechanism into a mortar and

pestle grinding machine offers significant advantages in terms of efficiency,
consistency, and ease of operation. By converting rotary motion into
reciprocating motion, this mechanism provides a mechanized solution for
grinding various substances with precision and control.

 Overall, the mortar and pestle machine with a slider-crank mechanism

represents a versatile and effective tool for a wide range of grinding
applications, catering to the needs of industries such as small ayurvedic
clinics.
