"ROLE OF TRIBAL UPRISING IN
THE INDIAN FREEDOM
STRUGGLE"
INTRODUCTION
India’s fi ght for freedom
involved many people,
including tribal communities.
They played an important
part in resisting British rule,
even though they are often
not given enough credit.
Tribes faced many problems
under British rule, and their
eff orts are important to
understand as part of India’s
history of struggle.
BIRSA MUNDA:
A TRIBAL HERO
BIRSA MUNDA WAS A BRAVE TRIBAL LEADER WHO
FOUGHT AGAINST BRITISH RULE IN INDIA. HE
BELONGED TO THE MUNDA TRIBE AND LIVED IN THE
FORESTS OF JHARKHAND.
THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT TREATED THE TRIBAL
PEOPLE UNFAIRLY, TAKING AWAY THEIR LAND AND
MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO LIVE THEIR LIVES.
BIRSA MUNDA WANTED TO PROTECT HIS PEOPLE AND
THEIR RIGHTS.
HE LED A REBELLION AGAINST THE BRITISH, INSPIRING
OTHERS TO JOIN THE FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE.
ALTHOUGH HE WAS EVENTUALLY ARRESTED AND DIED
IN PRISON, HIS LEGACY CONTINUES TO INSPIRE PEOPLE
TODAY. BIRSA MUNDA IS REMEMBERED AS A HERO
WHO FOUGHT FOR THE RIGHTS OF TRIBAL
COMMUNITIES.
SIDHU AND
KANHU
MURMU
Brothers who led the Santhal
Rebellion against British
exploitation and oppressive
landlords. Their revolt was one of
the largest tribal uprisings in India,
aimed at protecting their people
from unfair taxes and loss of land.
Though the rebellion was eventually
suppressed, it remains a signifi cant
moment in the history of India’s
freedom struggle.
TIROT SING (KHASI
UPRISING, 1829-
1833):
A courageous leader of the Khasi
tribe from Meghalaya, Tirot Sing
led the Khasi Uprising against
British attempts to take control of
Khasi hills. He fought to protect the
independence of his people and
their land. Though he was
eventually captured and
imprisoned, his resistance became
a symbol of bravery and pride for
the Khasi community.
CHALLENGES FACED BY TRIBE
DURING THE STRUGGLE
TRIBES HAD TO DEAL WITH MANY
DIFFICULTIES WHILE FIGHTING THE BRITISH

ECONOMIC PROBLEMS: THEY WERE

HEAVILY TAXED AND BECAME POOR
BECAUSE OF UNFAIR TREATMENT BY
LANDLORDS AND MONEYLENDERS.

LOSING LAND: THE BRITISH TOOK OVER

TRIBAL LANDS FOR PLANTATIONS AND
OTHER PROJECTS.

REPRESSION: THE BRITISH OFTEN

PUNISHED TRIBES HARSHLY BY ARRESTING
THEM OR SENDING TROOPS TO SUPPRESS
REVOLTS.
Conclusion
The contribution of tribal
communities to India’s
freedom struggle is both
significant and inspiring.
Despite facing oppression,
economic exploitation, and
displacement, tribal leaders
like Birsa Munda, Sidhu and
Kanhu Murmu, Tirot Sing, and
others led fierce resistance
against British rule. Their
