ABOUT HIS EARLY DAYS

• William Henry Gates III is the co-founder of Microsoft in 1975, his early days were marked by a strong interest in
technology and programming. Gates led the company as its chairman and chief executive officer until stepping down as CEO
in January 2000, succeeded by Steve Ballmer, but he remained chairman of the board of directors and became chief software
architect. During the late 1990s, he was criticized for his business tactics, which were considered anti-competitive.

• Born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington, Gates showed an aptitude for math and science from a young age. He
attended Lakeside School, where he first encountered computers, sparking his passion for coding.

•At just 13, Gates wrote his first program, and by high school, he and his friends created a small company called Traf-O-Data,
which monitored traffic patterns. After graduating, he briefly attended Harvard University but dropped out in 1975 to pursue
Microsoft with Paul Allen. The company initially focused on developing software for the burgeoning personal computer market,
which rapidly grew during the late 1970s and 1980s.

•In 1975, Gates and Paul Allen recognized the potential of the personal computer market. They developed a version of the BASIC
programming language for the Altair 8800, one of the first personal computers. This breakthrough laid the foundation for
Microsoft, which aimed to provide software that could power personal computers worldwide.

• Bill Gates was driven by a vision of a "computer on every desk and in every home." He believed in the transformative
power of technology to enhance productivity and improve lives. His relentless pursuit of innovation and efficiency set Microsoft
apart and established him as a leader in the tech industry.

• Through this early experiences, Gates cultivated a passion for problem-solving, entrepreneurship, and the belief that
technology could reshape the future. This foundation would lead to Microsoft becoming a dominant force in software and

MILESTONES AND STRUGGLES OF BILL GATES

• The Altair 8800 is the first successful micro-computer developed by Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) in 1975 by
Ed Roberts, in which Bill gates and Paul Allen specifically built a programming language for Altair 8800 personal computers called
Altair Basic.

• This programming language built for Altair 8800 allowed the users to write programs for Altair 8800. It played a pivotal role in shaping
the early software landscape and promoting the personal computing revolution. This software is being the first product sold by the
Microsoft. However the interest towards software made him to drop out Harward university law school

• Bill gates introduced Microsoft office suite consisting cohesive set of productivity tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), which became the
standard for business and personal use, enhancing efficiency in document creation and management. With its simple GUI, even non-
technical persons can able to work with it easily, making it more flexible is the reason for it success.

• Under the leadership of Bill gates, Microsoft released its first operating system called MS DOCS which is widely used throughout the
1980s and early 1990s until it was gradually replaced by Windows OS.

• Bill Gates and Paul Allen launched their first retail version of Microsoft Windows on November 20, 1985 which made personal
computing accessible to broader audience with its easy graphical user interface, allowing users to interact with computers more
intuitively , it supports a vast array of software applications from productivity tools to games. This extensive ecosystem attracts users
and developers alike also encourages software developer to develop application specifically and dynamically for the users.

• In the early days of Microsoft, Gates faced competition from established companies like IBM and Apple, as well as emerging software
developers. Building a foothold in a rapidly evolving market was challenging.

• Microsoft faced numerous antitrust lawsuits, particularly in the late 1990s and early 2000s especially from Macintosh and Netscape
navigator affected Microsoft’s reputation and operations.

• After enrolling at Harvard because of parents compulsion in studying law, Gates faced the struggle of deciding to leave college to
pursue Microsoft.
HOW BILL GATES AND HIS ORGANISATION MAKES IMPACT ON THE SOCIETY.

• This programming language built for Altair 8800 allowed the users to write programs for Altair 8800. It played a pivotal role in shaping
the early software landscape and promoting the personal computing revolution.

• It fostered a community of developers and users who began creating and sharing software, which helped build an early software
ecosystem around personal computers.

• Bill Gates co-founded Microsoft, which played a crucial role in making personal computing accessible to the people. The development
of user-friendly software like Windows transformed how people interacted with computers, changing daily life and business operations.

• He paved the way for manufacturing the Smart TVs of today. The features these TVs offer were first introduced by Microsoft
through its Media Center.

• By launching Xbox Live, the company familiarized the world with the idea of online gaming; a concept later followed by Sony
PlayStation.

• The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, he has donated billions to global health, education, and poverty alleviation. The foundation has
funded initiatives like vaccine distribution and disease eradication programs, significantly improving health outcomes in many
countries.

• During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bill Gates and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation committed more than $1.75 billion to various
initiatives aimed at combating the virus. This funding supported vaccine development, diagnostics, and treatment, as well as efforts to
ensure equitable access to vaccines in low- and middle-income countries. The foundation also collaborated with organizations like the
World Health Organization (WHO) and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to facilitate global vaccination efforts.

• Bill Gates Foundation Gates has been a significant supporter of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, contributing over $4 billion
toward polio eradication efforts, which have reduced polio cases by 99% worldwide
