2.1 Substituting into expressions
Learning Objectives:
Use the correct order of operations in
algebriac expressions.
Success Criteria:
Learners can use the correct order of
operations in algebraic expressions.
Use the correct
order of
operations and
brackets when
carrying out
calculations
Work out the value of the expression 5a-6b
when a = 4 and b =-3.
5a - 6b = 5(4) - 6(-3) Substitute a = 4 and b = -3
into the expression.
= 20 - -18 Work out multiplication
first.
= 20 + 18 Subtracting -18 is the same
as adding 18.
= 38
Learning Objectives:
Use the correct order of
operations in algebriac
expressions.
Work out the value of the expression 3x 2 -2y3
when x = -5 and y = 2.
3x2 -2y3 = 3(-5)2 - 2(2)3 Substitute = -5 and y = 2
into the expression.
= 3(25) - 2(8) Work out with the indices
first.
= 75 - 16 Work out the multiplications.
Finally work out the
= 59 subtraction.

Work with a partner to answer this question.
The expression x2 + y has a value of 15.
Write down three pairs of integer values for x and y when
a. x and y are both positive numbers
b. x and y are both negatives numbers
c. x is negative and y is positive, or vice versa.
