STANDARDS OF PRACTICE

Standards of practice
Key terms
• Standards of practice are the “how-to” of the discipline or clinical specialty.
• They include:
1. Clinical policy statements,
2. Standard operating procedures,
3. Clinical practice protocols
4. Clinical procedures. (describe the generalized view of a job without
getting into the major specifics).

• Policy statements clarify scope and authority related to a specific activity by
defining who can do what activity, with what level of supervision, and when.
• For instance, The role of nurses in medication administration by saying which
practitioners can dispense medications and what aspects of the medication
process can be delegated.

• Standard operating procedure (SOP) is a set of step-by-step instructions


compiled by an organization to help workers carry out routine operations.
• SOPs aim to achieve efficiency, quality output and uniformity of performance,
while reducing miscommunication and failure to comply with industry
regulations.
• For instance, how to measure blood pressure.

• Clinical practice protocols:
• In a healthcare setting, a protocol, also called a medical guideline, is a set of
instructions which describe a process to be followed to investigate a particular set
of findings in a patient, or the method which should be followed to control a
certain disease.

Standards of Clinical Nursing
Practice
• Establishing and implementing standards of practice are major functions of a
professional organization.
• The standards:
1. Reflect the values and priorities of the nursing profession.
2. Provide direction for professional nursing practice.
3. Provide a framework for the evaluation of nursing practice.
4. Define the profession's accountability to the public and client outcomes for which
nurses are responsible.

Why is professional practice important in nursing?


• The main purpose of professional standards is to direct and maintain safe and
clinically competent nursing practice. These standards are important to our 6

standards of practice and behavior for nurses,
midwives and nursing associates

• The Nursing and Midwifery Council exists to protect the public.


• they do this by making sure that only those who meet their requirements are
allowed to practice as a nurse or midwife in the UK, or a nursing associate in
England.
• they take action if concerns are raised about whether a nurse, midwife or nursing
associate is fit to practice

The Jordanian Nursing Council
(JNC)
• The Jordanian Nursing Council (JNC) is a national governmental regulatory
institution for nursing and midwifery in Jordan.

• The JNC is governed by a board of directors headed by Her Royal Highness


Princess Muna Al Hussein as president of the council.

• The board is comprised of 14 key representatives of the healthcare and the


community.

• JNC aims to protect and promote the health status of the population through
regulating and governing the nursing; education, practice and research.

National Standards & Core Competencies
for Registered Nurse in Jordan
• is a policy document developed by JNC for the purpose of promoting, guiding and
directing the registered nurse professional practice, it provides a framework that
standardize the nursing general practice and core competencies.

• Nurses need to take the responsibility and comply with these “Standards & Core
Competencies” as a reference toward safe, competent and quality nursing care.

• The educational institutions: are responsible for integrating these standards to
the nursing curricula to graduate competent nurses with the required core
competencies to make safe transition to the professional life.

• The practice institutions are responsible for adhering to these standards and
guide nurses’ practice and use it as an evaluation tool when measuring
performance.

Domains of the Standards
• The JNC standards for Registered Nurses are divided into 2 domains; the,
(a) Professional Standards,
(b) Practice Standards

Scopes of Application
• Standards are considered in three relevant cross-cutting themes representing
major areas (scopes of application) of the nursing profession that are important
to all seven standards:
1. Clinical practice
2. Education
3. Research.

Research:
1. Ability to access research and use information systems
2. Involvement in research
3. Ability to implement research findings into practice, including use of and development of policies/protocols and guidelines.
4. Conference presentations

Education:
5. Principles of teaching and learning
6. Supporting others to develop knowledge and skills
7. Promoting learning environment
8. Developing education materials
9. Teaching, mentoring and coaching

Clinical Practice
10. Decision making/clinical judgement and problem solving
11. Critical thinking and analytical skills incorporating critical reflection
12. Managing complexity
13. Ethical and legal decision-making
14. Assessment, diagnosis referral, discharge
15. Developing higher levels of autonomy
16. Assessing and managing risk
17. Developing & evaluating therapeutic interventions to improve service user outcomes

Competencies (‫الكفايات‬
• The competencies listed under each standard are the core competencies that reflects
achieving the standard,
• It is the integration of knowledge, skills, abilities and judgment that the registered nurse
should have.

Each competency has a list of measurement criteria enabling the evaluation of the
registered nurse.

Measurement criteria:
• Measurement criteria are specific and measurable elements enabling the evaluation of the
actual performance of the RN to meet each standard.

• Measurement criteria will be especially helpful for nurses assuming responsibilities in


leadership, clinical practice, education and research, in addition the measurement criteria
are the basis evaluation tools for nursing performance. 15
A. Professional Standards

• The Professional standards are rules to provide competent profession, that nurses are
required to achieve in their performance.
• The professional standards include (6) main standards in cross cutting themes:

1. Performance:
• Relate to the professional, legal and ethical responsibilities, accountability, and advocacy
for individual and group rights.

2. Knowledge
• Reflects evidence based knowledge, skills, judgment, critical thinking, analysis.

3. Relationships
• Involves professional communication, collaboration, consultation and coordination with
individuals/groups, peers and colleges, all levels of nursing staff to provide health care

4. Professional Development
• Relates to quality improvement and professional development activities, which
may include certification and others.

5. Leadership and Management


• Includes nursing leadership, management and administration to ensure and
promote responsible nursing practice and service.

6. Resource Utilization
• Relates to utilization of appropriate resources, to planning and providing nursing
services that are safe, effective and financially responsible.

B. Practice Standards
• This domain focuses on the provision of comprehensive, systematic and
prioritized nursing care to achieve identified health outcomes.

• It consists of one standard 'Provision of Client Centered care' and 6 sub-sections


which include:
1. Assessment,
2. Identify Issues/ Problems or Trends,
3. Outcome Identification,
4. Planning,
5. Implementation
6. Evaluation.
