INTRODUCTION

India has the second largest road network in the world with over 3 million km of roads of which 60% are paved. These
roads make a vital contribution to India’s economy. Road safety is emerging as a major social concern in the country. The
statistics with an average mortality rate of 1, 00,000 persons dying in road accidents. India having more than 33 lakh
kilometer of well-spread road network. At the same time, India has one of the highest accident rates in the world with more
than 14 accidents per thousand vehicles every year, compared to only 6 to 8 accidents per thousand vehicles in developed
countries. India accounts for about 10 percent of road accident fatalities worldwide. An estimated 12, 75,000 persons are
seriously injured on the road every year. Studies on accidents, the world over, have shown that the human factor is
responsible for a majority of accidents. Road Safety is a multi-dimensional issue in order to improve the safety of road; it
incorporates the development and management of road infrastructure, rules and regulations, law enforcement to the road
users etc. Today road disaster and harrowing demise of valuable lives in road accidents is very common in India. Every day
one can see these types of heart-rending awful incidents by road users. Due to rapid growth of population, industrialization,
and urbanization and advanced transport technology more and more vehicles come to road to meet day to day human
demands. These days almost every person essentially depends upon the vehicles for routine works. Due to lack of adequate
road structural facilities, proper skill in driving and unawareness of traffic rules, we face so many problems and risks in
relation to our lives and property.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
• High accident rates near college corners due to poor traffic management.
• Absence of essential infrastructure such as traffic signals, signage, and pedestrian crossings.
• Narrow roads unable to handle high traffic volumes during peak hours.
• Unauthorized roadside parking causing visibility issues and obstruction.
• Lack of traffic enforcement leading to reckless driving and rule violations.
• Unsafe pedestrian movement due to no designated walkways or crossings.
• Frequent congestion and delays impacting road efficiency and safety.
• Urgent need for civil engineering solutions to improve road design and implement traffic regulations.
CAUSES OF THE PROBLEM

• Lack of traffic regulation and enforcement.

• Inadequate road design (no provision for turning lanes, pedestrian crossings, etc.)
• .Poor visibility due to obstacles.
• Overcrowding during peak hours.
• Due to uneven surface of the road
PROBLEM SOLUTION – ENGINEERING
MEASURES
1. Improved Road Design:
Widening the road or adding dedicated lanes.
Adding raised pedestrian crossings and zebra stripes.
2. Traffic Calming Measures:
Speed breakers, rumble strips, or road narrowing.
Traffic roundabouts for smoother flow.
3. Signage and Signals:
Installing traffic lights and clear signage.
Solar-powered LED lights for better visibility at night.
4. Dedicated Parking Areas:
Removing roadside parking.
Designated parking zones near the college.
TRAFFIC SIGNS
ADVANCE SOLUTION

• 3D model speed breaker we designed on fusion 360 software

• Dimensions of above speed breaker

• * Length =7m
• * Width =3.7m
• * Thickness= 0.10m
• Material used to produced to make speed breaker is rubber or plastic
COST ANALYSIS AND FEASIBILITY

• Total Cost Over Lifespan:

• Warning Signs (10 years):Installation: ₹2,000
• Maintenance (for 10 years): ₹500 * 10 = ₹5,000
• Total Cost = ₹2,000 + ₹5,000 = ₹7,000
• Speed Breakers (5 years):Installation: ₹15,000
• Maintenance (for 5 years): ₹2,000 * 5 = ₹10,000
• Total Cost = ₹15,000 + ₹10,000 = ₹25,000
CONCLUSION

• The traffic issues near college corners, caused by inadequate infrastructure and lack of regulation, lead
to frequent accidents and congestion. Implementing solutions such as road redesign, pedestrian
crossings, traffic signals, and enforcement measures can significantly enhance safety and efficiency.
Collaborative efforts between authorities and the community are essential to ensure sustainable
improvements and long-term road safety.
