• Every year ransomware attacks cause an estimated loss of $1 billion (equivalent to
approximately one thousand crore BDT) for victim organizations and individuals.
• SonicWall Cyber Threat report illustrates after two straight years of increase,
ransomware volume peaked in Q2 2021 at 188.9 million USD (Around 200 crore BDT).
Bangladesh
Since 2021, around 14,627 unique count of IP addresses
originated from Bangladesh are found to be infected with
malware which can be mapped to possible ransomware
attack vectors

Recent Cyber Attacks in Bangladesh
• 1 August 2023: Bangladeshi payment gateway was hacked by a hacker group
• 3 July 2023: Bangladesh Railway's E-Ticketing website was unavailable for an hour
due to a DDoS attack.
• 24 June 2023: The Bangladesh National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases website
was defaced by hackers, and a web archive was shared as proof
• 21 June 2023: An attack on the website of a Bangladeshi military organization was
claimed by a hacker group
• 20 June 2023: Over 100,000 investors and investment applicants' data was allegedly
compromised by the same group, which also claimed to have compromised
Bangladesh's state-owned investment company
• In June 2023, there was a coordinated cyberattack: The attack targeted 25 public
and private institutions, including the Investment Corporation of Bangladesh and the
Directorate General of Health Services. As a result, significant data breaches occurred
• Smart NID database leak: Millions of Bangladeshi citizens' sensitive personal
information was exposed in this leak. There was a leak of data from the website of
the Office of the Registrar General, Birth and Death Registration: The leak exposed
the personal information of more than five crore Bangladeshis. It is clear from these
incidents that Bangladesh is vulnerable to cyberattacks and that improved
cybersecurity measures are needed. These factors have radically increased the
number of internet users where around 91 million citizens of Bangladesh are internet
subscribers and almost 90 million are smart phone users
