Family
-considered as the basic unit of a
society;
-a strong family means a strong
nation.
Types of
Family
Structure
• Nuclear Family
-considered as traditional
family setup
-consists of a mother,
father and their children
2. Single Parent
-a parent who takes care of one or more
children without the presence and/or
assistance of other biological parent.
-may be due to divorce, death and
unexpected pregnancy.
3. Step Families
-created by marriage or cohabitation of two
persons when one or both parties have
their own set of children from previous
relationship/s and at the moment living
temporarily or permanently as one family.
-the person who is not the biological parent
is called a step parent.
4. Extended
Family
-a family which includes not only
parents and children but also other
relatives like grandparents, aunts,
uncles, nephews or nieces.
Patterns of
Parenting
Styles
• Authoritarian
-they depend on force to control their
children
-tend to have high expectations of their
children and set house rules which
should be strictly followed
-expect their orders to be obeyed
2.Permissive
-”nondirective parents”
-parents who do not consistently
enforce rules and do not have high
expectations of their children
-they are more of a friend than a parent
-they are more responsive than they are
demanding
3. Authoritative
-involves child-centric approach where
parents hold high expectations for their
children but also send the necessary
support and resources in order for their
children to succeed
-tendencies to exhibit good social skills,

-uninvolved parenting
Rejecting/neglecting
-lacking responsiveness to a child’s
needs where parents show bare
emotional attachment to their children
-impose few or no demands and seen to
be neglectful or indifferent
