RE-CREATION & COVENANT
COVENANTS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT
WHAT IS A COVENANT?
• A solemn agreement between
human beings or between god and
a human being in which mutual
commitments are made
• The concept of a covenant between
God and his people is one of the
most central themes of the bible.
• A covenant often promises specific
benefits, rewards, or blessings for
people who keep the terms of the
agreement. Image in public domain
• But they also threaten sanctions,
punishments, or curses for people
who break the terms of the
contract.

COVENANT OR
CONTRACT?
• While a contract is legally binding, a covenant is a spiritual
agreement.
• A covenant is an agreement you can break while a covenant
is a perpetual promise.
• You seal a covenant while you sign a contract.
• A contract is a mutually beneficial relationship while a
covenant is something you fulfill.
• In a contract, if a person does not fulfill his obligation, then it
gives the other party to back out as well.
• The same is not true in a covenant. You must hold up
your promise even if others do not hold up their pledge.
• Covenants are a type of contract, but they do not work like a
contract.
• They are a trust-based promise that relies on your
integrity and discipline. While contracts are enforceable
by the courts, covenants depend on your values.

Noah and the Great Flood- Group One
Noah was a good man all his life, and he always followed God. He had
three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
When God looked at the earth, he saw that people had ruined it. Violence
was everywhere, and it had ruined their life on earth.
So God said to Noah, “Everyone has filled the earth with anger and
violence. So I will destroy all living things. I will remove them from the
earth. I will bring a great flood of water on the earth. I will destroy all
living things that live under heaven. Everything on the earth will die. I will
make a special agreement with you. You, your wife, your sons, and their
wives will all go into the boat. Also, you will take two of every living thing
on the earth with you into the boat. Take a male and female of every kind
of animal so that they might survive with you. Two of every kind of bird,
animal, and creeping thing will come to you so that you might keep them
alive. Also bring every kind of food into the boat, for you and for the
animals.” Noah did everything God commanded him.

world.
Noah and the Great Flood- Group 2
On the 17th day of the second month, when Noah was 600 years old, the
springs under the earth broke through the ground, and water flowed out
everywhere. The sky also opened like windows and rain poured down. The
rain fell on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights.
The water continued to rise, and the boat floated on the water high above
the earth. The water rose so much that even the highest mountains were
covered by the water. The water continued to rise above the mountains.
The water was more than 20 feet above the highest mountain.
Every living thing on earth died—every man and woman, every bird, and
every kind of animal. All the many kinds of animals and all the things that
crawl on the ground died. Every living, breathing thing on dry land died. In
this way God wiped the earth clean—he destroyed every living thing on
the earth—every human, every animal, everything that crawls, and every
bird. All that was left was Noah and his family and the animals that were
with him in the boat.

Noah and the Great Flood- Group 3
Rain stopped falling from the sky, and water stopped flowing from under
the earth. The water that covered the earth began to go down. After 150
days the water was low enough that the boat touched land again. The
boat stopped on one of the mountains of Ararat. Noah sent out a dove.
That afternoon the dove came back to Noah. The dove had a fresh olive
leaf in its mouth. This was a sign to show Noah that there was dry ground
on the earth. Seven days later Noah sent the dove out again. But this
time the dove didn’t come back.
After that Noah opened the door of the boat. He looked and saw that the
ground was dry.

Noah and the Great Flood- Group 4
Then God said to Noah and his sons, “I now make my promise to you and
to your people who will live after you. I make my promise to all the birds,
and to all the cattle, and to all the animals that came out of the boat with
you. I make my promise to every living thing on earth. This is my promise
to you: All life on the earth was destroyed by the flood. But that will never
happen again. A flood will never again destroy all life on the earth.”
And God said, “I will give you something to prove that I made this promise
to you. It will continue forever to show that I have made an agreement
with you and every living thing on earth. I am putting a rainbow in the
clouds as proof of the agreement between me and the earth. When I bring
clouds over the earth, you will see the rainbow in the clouds.

NOAH AND HIS
FAMILY
• This was an unconditional covenant
between God and Noah (specifically) and
humanity (generally).
• God gave the rainbow as the sign of the
covenant, a
promise that God would never again
destroy all life
on earth with a flood.
• This is a reminder that God can and will
judge sin.

God said that the older (Esau) would serve
the younger (Jacob)
• Isaac rebelled and attempted to favor
the older anyway
• God’s plan was for Jacob to be next in
the line of patriarchs – which eventually

EXODUS 3:4,7, 10-12
WHEN THE LORD SAW THAT MOSES WAS COMING CLOSER, HE CALLED TO HIM FROM THE MIDDLE
OF THE BUSH AND SAID, “MOSES! MOSES!” HE ANSWERED, “YES, HERE I AM.” THEN THE LORD
SAID, “I HAVE SEEN HOW CRUELLY MY PEOPLE ARE BEING TREATED IN EGYPT; I HAVE HEARD THEM
CRY OUT TO BE RESCUED FROM THEIR SLAVE DRIVERS. I KNOW ALL ABOUT THEIR SUFFERINGS.
NOW I AM SENDING YOU TO THE KING OF EGYPT SO THAT YOU CAN LEAD MY PEOPLE OUT OF HIS

• While we live in a different world now, we are
reminded that, even after liberation from
slavery, there are still
many challenges plaguing modern society.
• Our journey to redemption is ongoing,
demanding work of our hearts, hands, and
minds.
• Q: What are some of the large
challenges/plagues facing the world
today?
• During the final plague, god wanted to protect the Israelites
• He told Moses that all the families should paint the blood of a
lamb on the frame of their house
• The spirit would “pass over” these homes and leave the families
untouched
• Jews today still celebrate this holy event – “Passover”
• Following the 10th Plague, the Pharaoh released the Israelites

THE DAVIDIC COVENANT
WHO WAS
KING
DAVID?
• David was the youngest
son of Jesse (a man of
Bethlehem) and served
as a shepherd
• God revealed to Samuel
that David was to be the
true King of Israel
• Samuel anointed David in
the family room of his
house
• There were no
crowds or celebration
• He is the King, but no
one knows it yet
DAVID &
SAUL
• David began working in the
royal court, acting as an aide
to King Saul
• He played the harp and
composed music for him
• Eventually, Saul
promoted him as his
armour bearer
• During this time the Israelites
were engaged in conflict with
the Philistines
• David got into a conflict
with a particularly large
and reputable Philistine
named Goliath
• After this, David began to
gain popularity and Saul
became jealous of David
• He even tried to
have David killed
DAVID &
GOLIATH
• A giant named Goliath who could be
described as a "weapon of mass
destruction”.
• The mere sight of this towering
enemy filled the Israelite soldiers
with dread.
• However, amidst the fearful ranks, a
young David remained undaunted.
• Armed with nothing but a sling and a
stone, David confronted the giant,
striking goliath squarely on the
forehead.
• The impact felled the giant, and David
quickly finished him off with his sword.
• The Philistine army, seeing their
champion defeated, fled in
disarray, turning the tide of battle
in favor of the Israelites.

KING
DAVID’S
REIGN
• Following the battle with Goliath,
the political landscape continued to
shift rapidly
• Saul and his sons eventually
died in other battles with the
Philistines
• The Israelites were divided into 2
groups: those who supported Saul's
remaining son, Ishbaal, as leader,
and those who rallied behind David
• David made a covenant with the
elders of northern Israel and was
then anointed as king over all of
Israel
• He went on to rule over many small
kingdoms bordering Israel,
controlling many of the major
crossroads and trade routes
• He also brought the Ark of the
Covenant into Jerusalem,
cementing it as a Holy city
DAVID THE
MUSICIAN?
• King David was not just another
figure in history - he lives on to
this day.
• One of king David’s greatest
works, and arguably his
greatest legacy, was the book
of Psalms.
“The LORD is my rock,
my protection, my saviour. My God
is my rock. I can run to him for
safety. He is my shield and my
saving strength, my defender. I
will call to the LORD, who is
worthy of praise, and I will
be saved from my enemies.” -
Psalm 18:2-3
THE DAVIDIC
COVENANT
• The Davidic covenant amplifies the
“seed” aspect that was detailed in the
Abrahamic covenant
• God promises that David’s physical
line of descent will last forever and
that his kingdom will never pass away.
• While David does break his covenant
with god, it becomes the basis
for hope of a coming Messiah from
the line of David.
DAVID’S “HOUSE”
• GOD WILL ESTABLISH FOREVER DAVID’S “HOUSE,” THE
ROYAL DYNASTY THROUGH DAVID’S DESCENDANTS.
• DAVID’S SON (SOLOMON) WILL BUILD GOD’S “HOUSE,”
THE FIRST TEMPLE OF JERUSALEM.
• THE “SIGN” OF THIS COVENANT WILL BE THE
DESCENDANTS OF DAVID AND THE TEMPLE ITSELF.
