Packed Cell Volume Heamatology
Packed Cell Volume Heamatology
fill the plain capillary tube with well – mixed venous blood collected in EDTA or
heparinized capillary tube with blood from a freely flowing capillary puncture.
seal one end of the capillary tube in a Bunsen flame/with plasticine.
place the capillary in the micro-hematocrits centrifuge, and screw on the safety
cover.
close the lid and spin at 12,000 rpm for five minutes
place the spun tube into the specially designed hematocrits Reader and read off
the PCV as percentage.
Sample: whole blood collected in EDTA or from a capillary puncture.
Normal Ranges:
PCV RANGE
Men: 37 - 50%
Women: 34 - 47%
Children: 32 - 45%
USES OF PCV TEST
A PCV test primarily measures the percentage of RBCs in a sample
of blood.
It is usually performed to diagnose or rule out blood conditions
such as anemia or polycythemia in patients.
Doctors may also recommend the PCV hematocrit test to evaluate
the response to blood transfusions or determine the effectiveness of
treatments for certain blood conditions.
Overall, a PCV test provides a thorough assessment of a person's
health and their risk of developing certain medical conditions. PCV
test results are expressed in percentages.
If the PCV blood test shows a reading of 50%, it means that in 100
ml of blood, red blood cells occupy 50 ml by volume.
Any increase or decrease in this reading may indicate various health
conditions and problems, some of which may be chronic
FACTORS AFFECTING THE ACCURACY OF PCV
Pcv test can be used for diagnosing certain blood disorders or for
monitoring the overall health of patients.
