LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Identify the characteristics of the images (size,
location, orientation, and type) which are
produced by concave mirrors.

Solve problems in finding focal length,

distances of objects and images, and heights of
objects and images.

Appreciate the various uses of concave mirror

in the daily basis.

REFLECTION ON SPHERICAL
MIRRORS
A curved mirror is a reflecting
surface in which its surface is
a section of sphere. There are
two kinds of curved mirrors,
the concave and the convex
mirror. A spoon is a kind of
curved mirror with both
concave and convex surfaces.
IMAGES FORMED BY
CURVED MIRRORS
Center of Curvature, C - the center of the sphere of which
mirror is part. Its distance from the mirror is known as the
radius.

Vertex, V - the center of the mirror.

Focal Point/Focus, F - the point between the center of the

curvature and vertex. Its distance is known as the focal
length, f.
CONCAVE
MIRROR
• It is a curved mirror in
which the reflective
surface bulges away from
the light source.

• It is also called Converging

Mirror because the parallel
incident rays converge or
meet/intersect at a focal
point after reflection.

SAMPLE
PROBLEM 1:
A 5cm tall light bulb is placed at a
distance of 45cm from a concave mirror
having a focal length of 10.5cm.
Determine the image distance and the
image height.
SAMPLE
PROBLEM 2:
An object is placed 25 cm in front of a
concave mirror. The image formed is
15 cm behind the mirror. Calculate the
focal length of the mirror.
QUIZ
PROBLEM SOLVING:

1. What is the image distance and image height if a 7cm tall object is

placed 30cm from a concave mirror having a focal length of 1cm?

2. A magnified, inverted image is located a distance of 30cm from a

concave mirror with a focal length of 15cm. What is the object distance?

3. An object is placed 10 cm in front of a concave mirror. The image formed

is 20 cm behind the mirror. Calculate the focal length of the mirror.

ASSIGNMENT
In a 1 whole sheet of paper, draw a ray diagrams of
a concave mirror and identify the characteristics
of the image formed by a concave mirror.

• Farther than the Center of Curvature

• Between the Center of curvature and Focal point
