CAPAC I TA N C E

CAPACITANCE
• IS AN INDICATOR OF THE AMOUNT OF CHARGE A PARTICULAR CAPACITOR WILL STORE PER VOLT OF POTENTIAL
DIFFERENCE ACROSS ITS PLATES; THE LARGER THE CAPACITANCE, THE MORE CHARGE THAT IS STORED. THE
CAPACITANCE OF A CAPACITOR IS ANALOGOUS TO THE TO THE RESISTANCE OF A RESISTOR IN THAT
CAPACITANCE DEPENDS ON THE MATERIALS OF WHICH THE CAPACITOR IS MADE AND ON ITS DIMENSIONS.
SPECIFICALLY THE CAPACITANCE DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF ITS CONDUCTING PLATES OR SURFACES, ON THE
SEPARATION OF THESE PLATES, AND ON THE TYPE OF MATERIAL SEPARATING THEM. TO UNDERSTAND THESE
FACTORS AFFECT CAPACITANCE, LOOK AT THE PARALLEL-PLATE CAPACITORS SHOWN BELOW.
(a) A capacitor with plates of
large area can store more
charge than (b) one with
plates of small area. More
charge is stored if (c) the
plates are close to each other
rather than (d) far apart.
