Learning
Objectives
Learners will be able to explain why protecting the
environment is critical for biodiversity conservation, public
health, sustainable development, and mitigating climate
change.
Learners will be able to outline and describe major Philippine
laws related to environmental protection, such as the Clean
Air Act, Clean Water Act, Climate Change Act, and Ecological
Solid Waste Management Act.
Learners will understand the key effects of global warming
and climate change on the Philippines, such as rising sea
levels, more frequent typhoons, and impacts on agriculture
and livelihoods.
Environmental Awareness
and Protection in the
It is criticalPhilippines
in addressing the country's
pressing environmental challenges,
including global warming and climate
change.
As an archipelago with rich biodiversity but
high vulnerability to natural disasters, the
Philippines recognizes the importance
of protecting its environment and
educating its citizens on sustainability
Importance of Environmental
Awareness and Protection
Biodiversity Conservation: Environmental
awareness is crucial to protecting ecosystems,
endangered species, and natural habitats from
deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable practices.
Combating Global Warming and Climate
Change: Awareness of climate change empowers
individuals and communities to take steps in
mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to
its effects.
Importance of Environmental
Awareness and Protection
Sustainable Resource Management:
Environmental awareness helps promote the
sustainable use of natural resources, such as water,
forests, and marine life, ensuring that future
generations can benefit from them.
Public Health and Safety: Pollution and
environmental degradation have direct impacts on
public health. Raising awareness about the harmful
effects of air and water pollution, improper waste
disposal, and toxic chemicals can reduce health risks.
Importance of Environmental
Awareness and Protection
Economic Benefits: Protecting the environment is
also essential for sustainable economic development.
Industries like agriculture, fisheries, and tourism are
heavily dependent on a healthy environment.
Environmental awareness promotes practices that
ensure the longevity of these sectors while minimizing
ecological damage.
Environmental
Laws Promoting
Awareness and
Protection in the
Philippines
Republic Act No. 9512 – National
Environmental Awareness and
Education Act of 2008
This law mandates the integration of
environmental education at all levels of the
Philippine educational system.
It aims to promote environmental literacy by
incorporating topics such as environmental
protection, natural resources conservation, waste
management, and the impacts of climate change into
the curriculum.
Republic Act No. 9729 – Climate
Change Act of 2009:
This law created the Climate Change Commission
(CCC) to formulate policies and coordinate
government actions on climate change. It mandates
the integration of climate change
considerations into local and national
development plans.
Republic Act No. 9003 –
Ecological Solid Waste
Management Act of 2000
This law promotes the proper segregation,
collection, and disposal of waste to reduce
the environmental impacts of improper waste
management.
It encourages communities and schools to
recycle, compost, and minimize waste, thus
contributing to a cleaner environment and
reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Republic Act No. 9147 –
Wildlife Resources
Conservation and
Protection Act
This law focuses on the
protection and conservation
of the country’s wildlife
resources. It aims to raise
awareness about the importance
of conserving wildlife and their
habitats, particularly those that
are endangered or vulnerable to
extinction.
Republic Act No. 7586 – National
Integrated Protected Areas System
(NIPAS) Act of 1992
The NIPAS Act protects areas of
national significance, including
parks, sanctuaries, and
reserves. It highlights the
importance of educating local
communities about the benefits
of conservation and the role
protected areas play in sustaining
the environment.
Republic Act No. 8749 – Clean Air
Act of 1999
This law aims to improve air
quality by regulating harmful
emissions from industries and
vehicles. It includes provisions
for environmental education
campaigns to inform the public
about the adverse effects of air
pollution and to promote
environmentally friendly practices
such as reducing emissions and
using cleaner energy sources.
Republic Act No.
9275 – Clean Water
Act of 2004
The Clean Water Act is designed
to protect the country's water
bodies from pollution by
regulating discharges into water
sources and promoting sustainable
water management.
Republic Act No. 10121
– Philippine Disaster
Risk Reduction and
Management Act of
2010
This law not only focuses on
disaster management but also
emphasizes the connection
between environmental
protection and disaster risk
reduction.
Global Warming and
Climate Change in the
Philippines
• The Philippines is one of the
countries most vulnerable to the
effects of global warming and
climate change.
• The country is actively participating
in global efforts to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions by
transitioning to renewable energy
sources, promoting reforestation,
and advocating for sustainable
