ABSTRACT
 As winter sets in, the air hanging over us thickens with smoke and gaseous emissions from
burning fields, industrial factories, and vehicular traffic, blocking out the sun and making it hard to
breathe
 . Experts say that the high levels of air pollution and COVID-19 pandemic can be a dangerous mix
that can have serious consequences.
 The necessity for real-time monitoring of Air Quality is very glaring
 So in this project, we are going to build an ESP32 Air Quality Monitoring System using Nova PM
SDS011 sensor, MQ-7 sensor, and DHT11 sensor.
 We will also be using an OLED Display module to display Air Quality Values. The Air Quality
Index (AQI) in India is based on eight pollutants, PM10, PM2.5, SO2 and NO2, CO, Ozone, NH3,
and Pb.
 However, it is not necessary to measure all of the pollutants. So we are going to measure the
concentration of PM2.5, PM10, and Carbon Monoxide to calculate the Air Quality Index. The AQI
values will be published on Adafruit IO
 so that we can monitor it from anywhere. Previously we have also measured the concentration of
LPG, Smoke, and Ammonia gas using Arduino.
Existing system

Using only ultraviolet light and solid-state electronics, the silent devices can
measure smog levels continuously, with little maintenance.

 Scientists started developing air pollution monitoring devices in the late 1940s.

Ambient air monitoring is the systematic, long-term assessment of pollutant levels

by measuring the quantity and types of certain pollutants in the surrounding,
outdoor air.
Proposed system
A proposed IoT-based air monitoring system could involve advancements in sensor
technology, enhanced data analytics, and improved connectivity.

 t could incorporate more sophisticated sensors capable of detecting a wider range of

pollutants with higher accuracy and sensitivity.

Additionally, it might leverage machine learning algorithms to predict air quality

changes based on historical data, provide real-time alerts to users,

Enable better integration with smart city infrastructure for more targeted interventions
to improve air quality

 Integration with emerging technologies like edge computing might also be explored to
process data closer to the source, reducing latency and enhancing system efficiency.

Circuit diagram details.

• The Arduino UNO is a widely used open-source microcontroller board based on

the ATmega328P microcontroller and developed by Arduino.
• The board is equipped with sets of digital and analog input/output (I/O) pins that
may be interfaced to various expansion boards (shields) and other circuits.
• It has integrated cache to improve the performance of the system in such
applications, and to minimize the memory requirements.
• Temperature & Humidity Sensor (DHT11) This DHT11 Temperature & Humidity
Sensor features a temperature & humidity sensor complex with a calibrated digital
signal output.
Circuit diagram details.

• This sensor includes a resistive-type humidity measurement component and an

NTC temperature measurement component, and connects to a high performance
8-bit microcontroller, offering excellent quality, fast response, anti-interference
ability and cost-effectiveness.
• When ESP8266 hosts the application, and when it is the only application
processor in the device, it is able to boot up directly from an external flash.
• It is programmable with the Arduino IDE (Integrated Development Environment)
via a type B USB cable.
SENSOR ( MQ-7 , DHT-11 , SFSO-11)

The MQ-7 sensor is a gas sensor primarily used to

detect carbon monoxide (CO) in the air.

The DHT11 sensor is a basic digital temperature and

humidity sensor. It measures ambient temperature
ranging from 0 to 50 degrees Celsius with a ±2°C
accuracy and humidity ranging from 20% to 80% with
a ±5% accuracy

Gas and Dust Sensor. The SDS011 using the principle

of laser scattering can get the particle concentration
between 0.3 to 10um in the air.
Power supply

We need to supply a voltage of 5V (DC)

to the Vcc pin and ground it to the GND
pin.

 The sensor output can be easily read

from the Data pin in terms of voltage (in
digital mode)

Ituses capacitive humidity sensor to

measure surrounding air so it needs +5v
dc
Arduino

 Arduino boards are microcontroller-based hardware platforms that

are open-source and programmable.

They come in various models and configurations, typically featuring

an Atmel AVR or ARM processor, digital and analog input/output
pins, USB connectivity for programming and power, and various
additional features like onboard Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or sensors.

 They’re popular for prototyping and creating various electronic
projects due to their ease of use, wide community support, and
extensive libraries and shields available for expanding their
capabilities.
Internet Of Things (IOT)
 IoT-based air quality monitoring system uses
interconnected sensors to collect real-time data on various
air quality parameters like air pollutants (CO2, CO,
PM2.5, etc.), temperature, humidity, and more.

 These sensors are deployed in different locations and

communicate the gathered information to a central system
or the cloud, allowing for remote monitoring, analysis, and
proactive measures to be taken based on the collected data.

 This system helps in understanding air quality trends,

identifying pollution sources, and taking appropriate
actions to improve air quality.
CLOUD COMPUTING.

• Cloud computing is the on-demand

availability of computer system resources,
especially data storage and computing
power, without direct active management
by the user.
• The term is generally used to describe data
centers available to many users over the
Internet. Large clouds, predominant today,
often have functions distributed over
multiple locations from central servers.
• If the connection to the user is relatively
close, it may be designated an edge server.
LCD (A liquid-crystal display).

• A liquid-crystal display (LCD) is a flat panel

display, electronic visual display, or video display
that uses the light modulating properties of liquid
crystals. Liquid crystals do not emit light directly.
• LCDs are available to display arbitrary images
(as in a general-purpose computer display) or
fixed images which can be displayed or hidden,
such as preset words, digits, and 7-segment
displays as in a digital clock.
• They use the same basic technology, except that
arbitrary images are made up of a large number
of small pixels, while other displays have larger
elements.

Conclusion.

• With the advancement in technology, it is expected that the availability of internet

is everywhere.
• We are developing an industrial application using internet of things (IOT)
technology.
• In this project we have proposed to provide an application for air monitoring and
to inform the responsible person to take appropriate measures.
• This project aims to serve as an efficient backbone for achieving a network of
sensors and actuators which can help for improving the performance of the day to
day activities of the society.
