1- WHAT IS
COBie
Construction Operations Building information Exchange,(COBie)
is a standardized data format used in the construction industry to
manage information related to the building and its operation during
the lifecycle of a facility, especially in the operation and maintenance
phases.
2-COBie Data
Structure
• Asset Information: Equipment, systems, components.
• Space Information: Rooms, areas, and floor details.
• Maintenance Data: Manufacturer details, warranties,
maintenance schedules.
3-benefits of CCBie
• Improved data accuracy and consistency.
• Reduced risk of missing or lost information during building handover.
• Streamlined facility management, including asset tracking, maintenance scheduling, and compliance reporting.
• Increased efficiency in operations and cost savings over the building’s lifecycle.
Information flow in the documentation process
THE COBie PROCESS
COBie is a 2d database representation of the model and
as such can be read in a spreadsheet format , like Excel.
COBie contain a vast array of information exchange
process including , but not limited to , zones , space, the
relation between them and asset information for operation
And maintenance for lifecycle of a project
A COBie spreadsheet entails information regarding
the multiple aspects of a project .
COBie are three basic princip
• Classification system.
This is a key foundation for COBie although the system used is up
to the owner. Using a classification system helps users to
navigate the information more easily and also brings with it the
possibility of aggregation across projects.
• Data model.
COBie is aligned with the buildingSMART open IFC model
meaning it shares good practice across the sector. It also means
that integrating design tools and construction processes will
become easier.
• Delivery format.
Users of COBie have the option to see the information in a
variety of different delivery formats including standard IFC ones.
They also have the option to use a spreadsheet-based data
collection and delivery format as well. This allows participation in
an openBIM workflow even if you don’t have access to a BIM
model view or have any knowledge of the IFC data model.

To Ensure a Successful
Import of COBie Data,
• Minimum table requirements
• Use unique model IDs.
• Use unique table IDs.
• Carefully define the space definitions.
• Use standardized categorization carefully.
• Divide large files or large buildings
into multiple files.
Worksheets Representation
• It contains multiple worksheets that represent a data schema. Each is organized so that
every column represents a data field and each row is for the unique elements that
contain the data.
• The columns are color coded to define their purpose.
• Some are required and clearly defined for a minimum deliverable (yellow and salmon),
while others are source software or owner specific (purple and green).
