PROJECT BACKGROUND
Currently, Uganda distribution utility companies like UMEME,
its distribution transformers are protected by use of Circuit
breakers and surge arresters against over phase current and
over voltages. However, the operation of these devices leads
to power outages for a while until a technician physically
visits the transformer to detect the fault.
The same applies for oil level and temperature monitoring ,
physical presence is still needed to read values manually.
EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES
Oil Level meter Single phase

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Lengthened power outages
Physical presence of the technician needed
Reduces power reliability
Increased time for troubleshooting
High replacement costs and labour costs
PHYSICAL PRESENCE NEEDED
SIGNIFICANCE
Remote system reduces physical
presence
Ensures power reliability
Eases troubleshooting incase of
failure
Cost effective as compared to
transformer replacement

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS
• This system can be deployed on all types of
transformers either single phase or three phase , only
that number of sensors needed can vary.
• For example for three phase distribution transformer ,
current sensors and voltage sensors for each phase are
needed.
• For Dry type distribution transformers , oil level sensor
is not required
