QUADRATIC

EQUATIONS
Let’s define first
what is a
Quadratic
Equation?
Quadratic Equations
• A quadratic equation is an
equation that can be written
in the form ax2 + bx +c = 0,
where a, b, and c are real
numbers, and a is not equal
to zero.(Standard Form)
The Standard Form
of a Quadratic
Equation :
ax + bx +c = 0
2
Quadratic Equations
•A quadratic equation in
one variable, say x, is
also known as a second-
degree polynomial
equation in x.
Second-degree
•It means that the highest
exponent of the equation
with single variable is 2.
Let’s try to identify
whether the given
equation is a
quadratic or not.
Remember:
Standard form:
ax + bx +c = 0
2

(where a, b and c are real

numbers and a 0)

Degree: 2
Quadratic Equation or
Not?
• Example 1: 3x2 + 9x =4
Standard form: 3x2 + 9x – 4 =
0

It is a Quadratic Equation in a
standard form where a = 3, b
= 9 and c = -4.
Quadratic Equation or
Not?
• Example 2: 5x3 – 2x + 3 = 0

It is NOT a quadratic equation

because the degree of the
equation is 3.
Quadratic Equation or
Not?
• Example 3: x2(3x2) = -3x2 + 2x -7
Simplify: 3x4 = -3x2 + 2x -7
3x4 + 3x2 - 2x + 7 = 0

It is NOT a quadratic equation

because the degree of the equation
is 4.
Quadratic Equation or
Not?
• Example 4: x(3x + 4) – 9 = 5x
Simplify: 3x2 + 4x – 9 = 5x
3x2 + 4x – 5x – 9 = 0
3x2 –x – 9 = 0
It is a Quadratic Equation in a
standard form where a = 3, b =
-1 and c = -9.
Quadratic Equation or
Not?
• Example 5: 0= -(x–7)2+3(y+2)–3y
Simplify:0 = -(x2-14x+49) + 3y+6-3y
0 = -x2+14x-49+6
0=-x2+14x-43
-x2 + 14x-43=0

It is a Quadratic Equation in a
standard form where a = -1, b = 14
and c = -43
Let’s try to write
Quadratic
Equation into its
Standard Form
STANDARD FORM
OF QUADRATIC
EQUATION
Standard form
• Write the equation in standard
form and identify the values of
a, b, and c.

• Example 1:
(x+4)2 – 3 = 5
Standard form
• Solution for Example 1:
(x+4)2 – 3 = 5
(x+4)(x+4) - 3 = 5
x2 + 8x + 16 – 3 = 5
X2 + 8x + 16 – 3 -5 = 0
X2 + 8x + 8 = 0
a = 1, b = 8, and c = 8
Standard form
• Write the equation in standard
form and identify the values of
a, b, and c.

• Example 2:
2(2x2 – 3) = 4(x+9)
Standard form
• Solution for Example 2:
2(2x2 – 3) = 4(x+9)
4x2 -6 = 4x + 36
4x2 – 4x – 6 – 36 = 0
4x2 – 4x -42 = 0

a = 4, b = -4, and c = -42

SOLUTIONS OF THE
QUADRATIC EQUATION
Now, let’s
discussed the
solutions of
Quadratic
Equation.
Solutions of the
Quadratic Equation
• All values of the variables that
satisfy a given quadratic
equation in one variable are
called solutions of the
quadratic equation.(roots of
the equation)
Solution or Not?
• Example 1:
x2 + x – 6 = 0 ; x = 2
• Solution:
Substitute the value of x to the
equation:
(2)2 + 2 – 6 = 0 ?
4+2–6=0?
6–6=0
0 = 0 Therefore, it is a solution.
Solution or Not?
• Example 2:
36n2 – 9 = 0; n = -
• Solution:
Substitute the value of n to the
equation:
36(- )2 – 9 = 0 ?
36() – 9 = 0 ?
9 -9 = 0 Therefore, it is a
solution.
Solution or Not?
• Example 3:
10y2 – 5 = 65; y =
• Solution:
Substitute the value of y to the
equation:
10( )2 – 5 = 65 ?
10(5) – 5 = 65 ?
50 – 5 = 65 ?
45 Therefore, it is not a
solution.
Remember!
*STANDARD FORM:
ax2 + bx +c = 0

*All values of the variables that

satisfy a given quadratic
equation in one variable are
called solutions of the quadratic
equation.
