FINAL YEAR PROJECT

FYP (2021-2022)
Department of Chemistry, SNS, NUST

Title: Phytochemical study of Prunus domestica

Linn shoots extract and its corrosion inhibition
potential

Advisor Name: Dr. Azhar Mehmood

Group: Khadija Mahboob, Urva Amjad and Saira Batool
INTRODUCTION

• Loss of hundred billion dollars every year due to corrosion

• Conventional methods of corrosion inhibition employ the use of synthetic inhibitors
• Expensive and have severe environmental consequences
• Green corrosion inhibitors have become an object of great interest
• Source of green corrosion inhibitors are natural products
INTRODUCTION

• Elements like O, N and S present in organic compounds

• Adsorption of these compounds forms a protecting film
• Corrosion inhibitors are chemicals added to the corrosive medium
• Coatings should be corrosion resistant
• Health and environmental hazards of synthetic toxic chemical inhibitors
• Use of natural products as anticorrosion agents
• Ecofriendly, biodegradable and harmless
LITEREATURE AND OBJECTIVES

• Usually the natural extracts have the potential to inhibit corrosion of metals in various
aggressive media
• The production of Prunus domestica Linn occurs in mountain ranges
• One of the first plant domesticated by humans
• Researchers have screened the phytochemical constituents of Prunus domestica and
investigated their bioactivities
• S. Kayano et al. have isolated 4-amino-4-carboxychroman-2-one, p-coumaric acid, vanillic
acid â-glucoside, protocatechuic acid, and caffeic acid from MeOH eluate of ethanol
extract of prune by column chromatography
• These compounds have exhibited antioxidant activity 0.15-1.43 units (µmol of Trolox
equiv)/µmol by oxygen radical absorbance capacity
LITEREATURE AND OBJECTIVES

• G. L. Boccia et al., have studied the antioxidant and phenolic contents of plums,
conventionally and organically grown in the same farm
• It was noticed that ascorbic acid, R-, γ-tocopherols, and â-carotene were higher in organic
plums grown on soil covered with natural meadow
• The highest phenolic acids content was detected in plums grown on soil covered with
trifolium.
• Total polyphenols and quercetin content were higher in conventional plums but myrecitin
and kaempferol were higher in organic plums
• O. Rop et al., have also reported chemical characteristics of Prunus domestica L
LITEREATURE AND OBJECTIVES

• The report on chemical characteristics of Prunus domestica L showed outstanding

nutritional properties in terms of phenolic substances pectins, and minerals
• This parameter was highly correlated with the total antioxidant capacity of the fruit
• A study on phenolic composition of skin and flesh from plums was done using Ultra
Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry
• A total of 52 compounds were identified, including 21 proanthocyanidins, 15 flavonoids,
nine phenolic acids, five hydroxychalcones, and two isoprenoid glycosides
• In summary Prunus domestica would be considered as influential source of bio active
green corrosion inhibitor
LITEREATURE AND OBJECTIVES

• Objectives:
• To study phytochemical constituents of P. domestica shoots extract
• To study corrosion inhibition potential of P. domestica shoots extract
• To explore green corrosion inhibitors from P. domestica shoots
PROBLEM STATEMENT
WORK PLAN/
METHEDOLOGY
• This project includes screening of the various fractions of shoots extracts of Prunus
domestica.
• Plant materials including shoots (1 Kg) of Prunus domestica Linn would be collected
from KPK, Pakistan.
• These parts will be subjected to shadow drying.
• Afterward these parts would be individually extracted with 80% aqueous EtOH and
concentrated with rotary evaporator.
• These extracts would be fractionated by n-Hexane, CHCl3 and EtOAc.
• These fractions will be screened for corrosion inhibition activity.
• The instrumentation to be used for its analysis are Column chromatography, Gas
Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Anticorrosion inhibition assay.
