Academic texts are known to maintain an
objective tone, Being objective means being
unbiased ensuring that no personal feelings or
inclinations are attached to statements. Some
important concept associated with forming
objective arguments are facts, opinions, and
generalizations.
In academic writing, facts and opinions are two
distinct types of information that need to be
presented clearly and accurately.

By clearly labeling facts and opinions, academic

writers can ensure that their readers understand
the difference between what is established
knowledge and what is a personal perspective
WHAT IS FACT?
FACTS
Facts are statements that are proven or
accepted to be true. They are free of bias
or judgment. Unless proven or accepted,
a statement cannot be claimed a fact.
Remember that having several supporters
does not make a statement a fact.
Cautious analysis must be applied in
examining statements of claim.
FACTS
For example:
• According to the results of the tests, a new
vaccine has been shown to be effective in
preventing the spread of COVID-19.
• The research confirms that meditation can
reduce stress and anxiety levels in individuals
with high-pressure jobs.
• Scientists have recently discovered a new
species of butterfly in the Amazon rainforest.
FACTS CLUES

WHAT IS OPINION?
OPINION
opinions are statements that
express someone's beliefs or
views about something and are
generally based on facts. They
may involve personal judgment or
biases.
OPINION
For example:
• In my opinion summer is the best season.
• Some people think that social media is a
waste of time.
• My friends think that I should take a break
from school and travel.
• My parents thinks that having a boyfriend
while studying can cause distraction.
OPINION CLUES
• I think
• I believe
• I feel
• In my opinion
• Some people think
• My friends/parents think
• Some people claim
• He/she claims
Opinions, however, are not the
opposite of facts. In fact, one may
raise an opinion based on facts.
You may integrate facts to your
opinions so they carry more
validity.
WHAT IS A FACT-
BASED OPINION?
FACT-BASED OPINION
fact-based opinion is when you share
your opinion about something, but you
also support it with facts or evidence.
It's like having a conversation where
you're not just saying "I think this," but
"I think this because of this, this, and
this."
FACT-BASED OPINION
In other words, fact-based opinion is
when you combine your personal
thoughts and feelings with facts or data
to make a point. This helps to make your
opinion stronger and more convincing,
because it's based on more than just
your own perspective.
FACT-BASED OPINION
For example:
Opinion: The rainy season is dull.
Fact-based Opinion: The rainy season is dull
because many people cannot go out and do
outdoor
activities.

Opinion: The new phone app is useless.

Fact-based Opinion: The new phone app is
useless because it lacks features, has poor
user interface, and does not integrate well
