PARADIGMS

OF
INTERACTIO
N

LESSON 2 - HCI
PARADIGMS OF
INTERACTION
New computing
technologies arrive,
creating a new
perception of the
human-computer
relationship.
We can trace some of
these shifts in the
history of interactive
technologies.
What is
paradigm?
a perception or a group of
ideas about how things
should be done, made. Or
thought about.

Your perspective on the

world, your point of view, or
your beliefs about what’s
true.
Paradigm shift

A significant change in the

way an individual or a group
perceives something, and the
old paradigm is replaced by a
new way of thinking.

TIME-SHARING

Interactive
computing, in
which a single
computer could
support multiple
users.
NETWORKING

Community computing, the process

of making connections and building
relationships. These connections
can provide you with advice and
contacts, which can help you make
informed career decisions.
Networking can even help you find
unadvertised jobs/internships.
Networking can take place in a
group or one-on-one setting.
GRAPHICAL DISPLAY

Graphical displays communicate

comparisons, relationships, and
trends. They emphasize and
clarify numbers. To choose the
appropriate type of display, first
define the purpose of the report,
and then identify the most
effective display to suit that
purpose. For example, you can
use a multiline display to show
trends.
MICROPROCESSOR

any of a type of miniature

electronic device that
contains the arithmetic, logic,
and control circuitry
necessary to perform the
functions of a digital
computer's central processing
unit.
WORLD WIDE WEB

is a system of interconnected
public webpages accessible
through the Internet. The Web
is not the same as the
Internet: the Web is one of
many applications built on top
of the Internet.
individuals have personal paradigms, lenses
through which they view the world.

For example, think your favorite fruit. Imagine that

for as long as you could remember, your favorite
fruit was an apple. Then you visited other country,
and in the country where you stayed, there was
the whole new and wonderful rainbow of fruits
available for your taste and you tried them all, you
found out that you love mangoes that your usual
favorite apple.

When you exposed to new information or

experiences, you may realize that your belief or
perspective was previously incomplete.

Another complex example of personal paradigm

shift could be adjusting your lifestyle in order to
accommodate a relationship with someone who is
important to you.
Corporations and other organizations
have corporate paradigms, regarding the
methods by which they believe their goals will
best be accomplished.
For example, corporations are sometimes
acquired by another company, and when this
happens, a paradigm shift is likely to occur.

Maybe the acquired corporation previously

allowed employees to work on a flex-time
schedule because management believed this
simulated creativity and allowed people to
work when they were most efficient. However,
the company that acquired the corporation
may have a policy of everyone starting at
8AM and wearing business attire because this
new management believes these practices
from the most professional impression with
costumers.
Cultural communities have
cultural paradigms, that
include their sets of beliefs about
themselves, about others, and
about the world.
for example, different cultural
groups eat different types of
meat, and some eat little or no
meat at all. Sometimes this is
absed upon simple availability,
but other timed, this is based
upon religion or beliefs regarding
health.
ACTIVITY:
Grade is based on 100 pts. Incorrect word count for each
questions deduct 10 pts.

1. Research the paradigm shift and in 300 words,

write a paragraph explaining the paradigm shift.
2. Give at least 3 examples of paradigm shift,
explained the shift.
3. In no less than 100 words, explain what event may
have influenced a paradigm shift in your daily lives,
and how it affected your decision making.
