ACTIVITY 1:

Answer the following:

1. What is research?
is defined as the creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing knowledge in a
new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and
understandings. This could include synthesis and analysis of previous research to the
extent that it leads to new and creative outcomes.
2. Explain any three basic characteristics of research

Three Basic Characteristics of Research

Research is a systematic and rigorous process of inquiry aimed at discovering new
knowledge or understanding existing phenomena. Here are three basic characteristics
of research:
1.Systematic and Planned:
- Research is not haphazard or random. It follows a structured and organized approach.
Researchers carefully define their research objectives, formulate hypotheses, design their study,
collect data, analyze findings, and draw conclusions. This systematic approach ensures that the
research is conducted in a controlled and replicable manner, allowing for greater confidence in
the results.

2. Empirical:
- Research is based on **evidence**. This evidence is collected through observation,
experimentation, and data analysis. Researchers rely on verifiable facts and data to support
their claims and conclusions. This empirical approach ensures that research findings are
grounded in reality and not based on speculation or personal opinions.

3. Objective:
Research strives to be unbiased and impartial. Researchers aim to present information and
findings objectively, avoiding personal biases or preconceptions. This objectivity is crucial for
ensuring the credibility and validity of research findings. Researchers use various methods to
minimize bias, such as blind studies, random sampling, and peer review
3. Discuss the goals of research.
Research aims to achieve multiple goals, encompassing the pursuit of new knowledge,
the resolution of practical problems, and the validation of existing information. It seeks
to expand our understanding of the world, develop solutions to challenges, and refine
our knowledge through rigorous empirical evidence. Research serves to improve our
comprehension of complex phenomena, drive innovation and technological
advancements, and contribute to the advancement of academic fields by building
upon and expanding upon existing knowledge.

4. Differentiate types of research.

Applied Research
Basic Research
Correlational Research
Descriptive Research
Ethnographic Research
Experimental Research
Exploratory Research
Grounded Theory
Historical Research
Phenomenological Research
Qualitative Research
Quantitative Research

5. Why is research important to your course?

Research is not just an academic requirement for BSE students; it is a transformative
journey that equips them with the skills, knowledge, and critical thinking abilities
necessary to become effective, informed, and adaptable educators. By engaging in
research, BSE students develop a deep understanding of the learning process, gain
insights into the factors that influence student success, and contribute to the ongoing
evolution of the field of education. Their research-informed approach ensures that they
are prepared to navigate the complexities of the classroom, embrace new challenges, and
make a lasting impact on the lives of their students.
ACTIVITY 2:
A. Enumerate at least 3 possible problems you may encounter in the
different
settings below:

► Personal life (family and social) ► School

- Family Conflict - Academic Pressure
- Social Isolation - Bullying and Harassment
- Financial Strain - Lack of Resources
► Community - Ineffective Policies
- Crime and Violence
- Lack of Insfracture ► Relationships with significant
- Environmental Degredation others (classmates, friends,
professors, etc…)
► Workplace - Communication Breakdown
- Workplace Stress - Jealousy and Competition
- Discrimination and Harassment - Unrealistic Expectation
- Lack of Career Advancement
► Other areas of concern
► Government - Mental Health Issues
- Corruption and Inefficiency - Physical Health Challenges
- Lack of Transparency - Discrimination and Prejudice
B. Based on the enumerated possible problems, identify at least
three researchable problems and explain why you have chosen
them.
1. The Impact of Social Isolation on Mental Health Among Young Adults:

- Reason: Social isolation is a growing concern, particularly among young adults. It can lead to mental health
issues like depression, anxiety, and loneliness. This problem is researchable because it can be studied
through surveys, interviews, and data analysis to explore the relationship between social isolation and
mental health outcomes.
- Why Chosen: This problem is relevant, timely, and has significant implications for public health and well-
being. Understanding the factors that contribute to social isolation and its impact on mental health can
inform interventions and support systems for young adults.
2. The Effectiveness of Anti-Bullying Programs in Reducing Bullying and Harassment in Schools:

- Reason: Bullying and harassment are prevalent in schools, creating a negative learning environment and
impacting students' mental health. This problem is researchable by evaluating the effectiveness of different
anti-bullying programs through controlled studies, surveys, and observations.
- Why Chosen: This problem is important because it addresses a critical issue affecting students' well-being
and learning. Research can help identify effective anti-bullying strategies and inform policies to create safer
and more inclusive school environments.

3. The Relationship Between Workplace Stress and Employee Burnout: A Comparative Study of Different
Industries:

- Reason: Workplace stress is a common issue leading to burnout, decreased productivity, and health
problems. This problem is researchable through surveys, interviews, and data analysis to examine the
relationship between workplace stress levels and burnout rates across different industries.
- Why Chosen: This problem is relevant to a wide range of workplaces and has significant implications for
employee well-being and organizational performance. Research can help identify industry-specific factors
contributing to workplace stress and burnout, informing interventions and strategies for promoting employee
well-being.
► DIRECTIONS: To help you formulate the ‘INTRODUCTION’ of your study, ACTIVITY 3
exhaustively answer the following:
► PROPOSED STUDY: KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICES ON HOUSEHOLD SOLID
WASTE MANAGEMENT AMONG SELECTED BARANGAYS OF ZAMBOANGA CITY

► 1. What is the rationale of your chosen problem?

-

► 2. describe the setting where your study is to be conducted.

- The 3(three) barangay present different population sizes and economic conditions, considered
influencing factors on the disposal of solid waiste in household. Upper Calarian with very high
population densitity gives us an udesrtanding of how to solve the problem of managing solid waste
in crowded places. However, Guiwan is a small population that presents different concerns, and
Tumaga, being basically a rural barangay, presents the challenges and opportunity of solid waste
management for less equipped and developed areas.
► 3. What are the terms or variables (concepts) that need to be defined, clarified, or described to you
and to your reader?
- The interrelation among the independent variables which includes knowledge and attitude on
household solid waste management influencing the dependent variable which refer to household solid
waste practices. Knowing how these variables interrelate with each other helps the study pinpoint
factors that contribute to effective implementation of waste management practices, in turn develops
targeted interventions to enhance waste management behavior of the residents in the selected
barangays. the result lead to the improvement of waste management strategies to attain a more efficient
and eco-friendly waste management system.

► 4. Look for related literature / studies that define the main concepts of your research. (Collect at least
three references per concept). Write down the definitions.
- Oke and Ayanbode(2020) discovered that educating communities led to improved waste segregation
and reducing techniques.
- Another study was conducted in Roxas City, Capiz about the student's awareness and practices
towards solid waste management.
- Batool el al. (2018) discoveredthat people's opinios regarding trash disposal are greatly affected by
their level of knowledge.
► 5. Determine how serious your chosen problem is. Show statistical evidence of its gravity.
Give the complete details of the references.
-

► 6. What is the general objective or overall purpose of the study?

- Assesss the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of residents regarding household solid
waste management.
ACTIVITY 4:
► DIRECTIONS: Formulate the “STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM” part of your research.
TITLE OF YOUR RESEARCH: KNOWLEDGE ATTITUDE AND PRACTICES ON HOUSEHOLD
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AMOMG SELECTED BARANGAYS OF ZAMBOANGA CITY.
