GOALS OF CARDIAC REHAB
WHO Defined CR as
• The sum of activities required to influence favourable the underlying
cause of the disease , as well as the best possible physical, mental &
social conditions so that they may, by their own efforts preserve or
resume when lost, as normal a place as possible in the community
• Achievement of optimal health status & its maintenance
• Limitation of adverse effects of illness
• efficient & effective symptom management
• Stratification of risk for a further cardiac event to assist in clinical
decision making regarding further treatment
• Modification of cardiac risk factors to prevent progression of ischemic
heart disease as far as possible
CR TEAM
• Patients support people, family. Close friends
• ??
Role of physiotherapist
• Physical aspects of recovery
• Minimizing deconditioning effects of bed rest
• Enhancing CV & MSK functioning
• Breathing exercises, assisted / active exercises
• Supervised ambulation, stair climbing
• Instructions in home exercise , self monitoring and provision of
activity guidelines
• Ensure outpatient rehab program
Rationale for cardiac
rehabilitation
Early ambultation
• Decrease in duration of hospitalization
Exercise training
• Increase tolerance of usual activity which requires lower percentage
of maximal oxygen uptake
• Habitual physical activity
• Moderate intensity exercise
• Improved psychological well being
Secondary prevention
• Regular exercise reduces possibility of recurrence of MI
education
• Smoking
• Diet
• Blood pressure

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PROGRAM
Slow walk 2 mph 2-3 Mets

Regular speed walk 3 mph 3-4 Mets

Brisk walk 3-5 mph 4-5 Mets

Very brisk walk 4 mph 5-6 Mets
